Another transmission problem

this is my first post so take it easy please lol i've read the first couple of pages using search and havent found anything that is of major use, im getting a 99 ranger 4.0 v6 auto thats been in a wreck fro 50 bux i do bodywork so the damage isn't a problem, however the transmission was going out on the truck supposidly before the accident, the previous owner says 1st and reverse gears arnt working everything else is fine, any ideas should i rebuild or roll the dice and buy a junkyard one and throw it in there, im trying to keep this project cost to a minimum, as in non existant lol, any help or insite is greatly appriciated. Oh it is a 2wd truck also lol
