One more question if you don't mind. Will I be able to just get tunes written for the auto PCM instead of swapping the harness? I can handle the rewiring for the sensors on the trans, I am more curious about my speedometer showing the wrong speed. I just read Tre's thread and it was mentioned that the speedo was off when using the auto pcm and harness. Can that be fixed with a tune? Also, being that I have an '05, I do not have PATS so I wont have to worry about that will I?

Fx4wannabe01 06-23-2009 06:21 PM

He had a same year, same options, but manual PCM put on the truck, and had ford flash it to make PATS work properly. After that, everything worked. Since you don't have PATS, I don't think you have to worry about that. You'll still probably need a manual PCM? IDK. I think what you'd do is what Austin did...running his existing auto PCM but still throwing O/D codes. Trevor's doesn't throw any codes because the truck knows it's a manual, instead of thinking it's a automatic w/o a trans. lol.

elementsenjoi 06-23-2009 06:27 PM

Well I talked to Fred at Rogue a while back and he said he could just turn off the stuff in the tune that has to do with the transmission. That should keep it from throwing a o/d code I would think.

TrePaul86 06-23-2009 06:55 PM

Still going to throw codes because of the OSS and ISS sensors. Auto has ISS and OSS and manual has just the OSS on the tail housing.

I would recommend asking around to other people on here that have your year truck with the same options you do, only in a manual and grab the last 3 letters off their PCM. That's what I did and took it to Ford, had it flashed for $120 and everything works perfectly.

The truck runs completely different with a manual trans and matching manual PCM... When I had the auto PCM with manual trans, I couldn't shift past 3,000 RPM and the fuel delivery was way different too... Also idles rougher and when I would push in the clutch it would have no vaccum advance and the truck would almost die, and did a few times, coming to a stop.

Also, you'll need to have your Xcal II re-programed for a manual. No shift points with manual trannys.

If I were you, Just follow everything that's in my Auto to Manual swap Thread. It covers it all like Shane said. Good luck man. It's fun and challengeing, but that's part of why I did it.

elementsenjoi 06-23-2009 07:11 PM

So he can't just turn off the ISS? I guess I will just look around for a PCM or something. I know a few people at my local Ford dealership, maybe I can get a good deal on the reflash. Are you talking about that four digit code when you say the last three? I.E. my current code is CSK1, would I need the SK1?

Fx4wannabe01 06-23-2009 07:13 PM

04+ PCM's have 3 individual plug-ins, so its certainly possible the 04+ PCMs have a different code on their PCMs, and they may be 4 digit.

elementsenjoi 06-23-2009 07:15 PM

Huh? My '05 PCM looks the same as my '94 PCM. And I only have one plug.

Fx4wannabe01 06-23-2009 07:20 PM

I may be mistaken on the year...ford did their big wiring BS change in '04, so I assumed. That white sc'd truck wit hthe bumper had 3 plugs on his PCM, He's like a '07? Marie's '08 has the 3 plugs on her PCM as well.

elementsenjoi 06-23-2009 07:26 PM

Yeah I only have one plug and a four digit code. I just need to find someone with my truck except manual and get that code from them and have Ford reflash my PCM to their code, right? I can keep my auto harness? Sorry if I am asking a bunch of questions, I just need to make sure that I understand before I start. lol

TrePaul86 06-24-2009 02:06 AM

On the PCM it'll say 1L5A-xxxxxxxxyyy.... You want the "yyy" letters cuz those correspond to the options you have from the factory that go with your motor/trans combonation...

What I'm trying to say is figure out what options you have... (Power locks, windows, mirrors, 3.0L, 4.0L, auto, manual, manual t-case, auto t-case, A/C).... And find those 3 Letters at the end of the PCM tag...

Now find out who has your SAME OPTIONS as you have but with a manual tranny in place of your auto... That'll be your good base point for the re-flash. Pickin up what I'm puttin down?

truckcap22 06-24-2009 02:13 AM

how much do both have into the swap now? my auto is acting up and the stealership quoted me for 3300 bucks for it!

TrePaul86 06-24-2009 02:26 AM

Try about 1/3 that cost with new clutch, new slave, new clutch line, royal purple fluids and HURST shifter.....

Is that enough to convince you? lol

truckcap22 06-24-2009 02:49 AM

i would really love to do the swap, but i've never done it so i doubt i'd be able to handle it myself. although i stopped by the junkyard and they wanted like 175 for a trans would i need a 02 manual trans? or can i get any year? sorry for thread jacking i'm sure if i really get the urge i'll start my own, but i doubt i will thing looks awfully tricky to do the swap.

TrePaul86 06-24-2009 03:10 AM

Honestly man.... I've never done a tranny swap before this either. Shane had only done a few prior to helping me ALOT with mine...

You can do it, it's not hard at all. Take your time. The thing that took the longest was swapping the pedal assembly, or so it seemed to me lol.

Hand tools and a cheater pipe would do you just fine man.

Rounding up parts also was a time consumer, but the we had my old tranny out in 3 hours... Had the new one bolted up in about 3-4 hours, prepping all the parts and setting everything up and stuff...

It went together quite fast actually. Plus when you do the swap, you get to choose what interior you wanna go with... Like mine, expo buckets (I already had them) and shorty console... You've got a few choices.

truckcap22 06-24-2009 03:32 AM

lol its the prepping an other stuff for the new parts that worries me, also i'm not good with the wiring and computer problems that you seemed to have with yours,

would any 4.0 tranny do for the swap or does everything have to be yr specified?

lol i dont even know how to bleed a clutch let alone install one, or a slave or master cylinder haha

Alright so it is the long number on the PCM. Gotcha. Now I just have to find someone with my truck only manual, thats going to be interesting. Ha, and I have to find a transmission too. Thanks for all the help.

Chris

EDIT

What do you know, "05edge" has my truck with a manual maybe I should talk to him. One more question, did you ever change any of your harness or did you just splice in the plugs for the manual and leave the unused sensors?

TrePaul86 06-24-2009 09:32 AM

Never changed the harness. I had the harness, just in case I needed to, but never did.

I did however splice wires together and re connected wires down by the tranny. It's all in my Auto to Manual swap thread on here somewhere, the colors I used and what not.

elementsenjoi 06-24-2009 01:16 PM

I read it, twice actually, but for some reason I was getting confused. I am good now though.

Thanks,

Chris

TrePaul86 06-24-2009 07:58 PM

Sweet! Now lets see your project log for the Tranny swap! lol

korey89 06-24-2009 08:12 PM

this thread needs moar tranny pics!

elanalvey 06-24-2009 08:30 PM

transvestites?

elementsenjoi 06-24-2009 09:28 PM

Hah, I doubt I will make a project log, maybe I will take pictures along the way and post them up after though. It isn't set in stone that I am doing this, I am hoping though. It really just depend on what is wrong with my trans.

No transvestites in my truck thank you. lol
