Yes, Posi-Traction is Ford's trade name for their clutch-type limited slip differential. Ford made 7.5 and 8.8" versions, so be sure you're getting the right one for your truck (the Ranger has randomly come with 7.5 and 8.8" axles as well.) My 8.8 posi came out of a friend's 5.0 Mustang when he upgraded to a locker-type diff for drag racing. I rebuilt it with a ~$50 clutch kit and its been humming along ever since.

When you guys switch out your diffs, do you put in new bearing kits? My truck has 80,000mi on it, and I haven't had any bearing problems. Everybody that's been quoting me to switch out my diffs includes a bearing kit. I just want to make sure they aren't throwing in a little "extra" with the work.

Ford = Traction-Lok
Chrysler/Jeep = Sure-Grip or Trac-Lok
All are trade names for a clutch type limited slip differential.

The FORD Traction Loc is a light to medium duty limited slip traction device....
Several months ago I installed a Detroit TruTrac gear driven torque sensing limited slip. This limited slip is almost identical in design and performance to the Torsen that normally comes in the FX 4 Level II.
Have run one in my 98 Jeep Cherokee for 6 years. OffRoad and highway performance are fabulous.

If your ranger has the 8.8" rear ring gear your in luck. Several companys make Limited slip. I have the stock limited slip in the back of my 2002 4x4 offroad. Works awesome. My buddy keeter just ordered a Powertrax No-slip traction system for his 04 ranger 4x4. This awesome unit combines the the power of harsh lockers, with the qiet smoothness of lower traction limited slip posi. The guy he bought it from had a video of a 1999 2wd 1500 Ram that was playing in a snowy ditch that had the unit installed. He could go almost any where the 4x4s could. Keeter liked what he saw and ordered one up. $500 is what he paid. I'm sure if you shop around you may be able to get a better price.
