Hi guys, I'm a long time lurker learning all I can.....I have just done the unspeakable and nearly cooked my tranny in my 1993 ford ranger 2.3, forgot to stift out of overdrive while towing....dumbass.....doh!
So, I am now looking at tranny coolers to add to the stock one. Hayden makes one that uses rubber lines that is supposed to fit this truck.
BUT, my question is...is there much pressure behind these lines? Either the delivery or return? My steel lines have edefinately seen better days. I am either needing to replace the steel with steel or rubber totally....what can I sensibly get away with. If I have to i can bend up new steel lines but would rather do the lazy man's thing and run rubber or even hydraulic lines instead of steel. Just for the ease of not having to bend the steel etc.

So, men of knowledge......what's the news?

Oh it's a 2 wheel drive truck that is used to tow a alluminium boat or bike trailer.

I would guess your trans is fine, takes more than once to ruin them typically. plus you arent towing much of a load.

also napa and other parts stores sell transmission line (rubber) just run that from the transmission to the cooler. you can just cut the steel line a few inches away from the trans, slide the hose over it and double clamp it there. The rest of the way will not need double clamps. Also make sure you hang or support the hose the best you can. Use zip ties to hold everything together and out of harms way!

Somebody told me that there was a fair bit of pressure in one of the lines and rubber wasn't recommended???? I was thinking rubber also but this guy scared me to ask questions.....thoughts?

 

the steel tranny cooler line from the transmission to the cooler is STEEL for a reason , the fluid is hot and does run at some pressure ( 34 psi ) if i remember correctly
