auto tranny to manual tranny swap

A good friend of mine found me a crashed 2002 xlt ranger with the 5 speed manual....I would love to have manual in my truck....what would it take to straight swap the manual in for the auto? The crashed truck and mine are identical minus the year difference. Plus its only got 20k some miles on it.

It wouldn't be too hard when working from the right donor truck. Luckily a 2001 and 2002 are nearly identical, as long as they are both 4.0L and both 4x4s. In addition to the transmission, you'd need the clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, brake and clutch pedals and mounts, clutch master cylinder with pushrod and hydraulic lines and the manual transmission PCM. My guess is that the transfer cases are the same as long as they are both the B-W 13-54 shift-on-the-fly electric units (highly likely).

The plastic trim is different on the steering column and there is a manual ignition switch blockout lever to replace the automatic's column shifter interlock. It may involve swapping the columns between the trucks but I doubt it. My guess is that you should be able to swap all the necessary bits from column to column.

The instrument cluster would need to have the gear indicator removed for a clean job. It just gets swapped with the blanking plate from the manual truck's cluster.

You also need the harness down to the transmission - it has different wiring for the manual transmission and I believe it may involve swapping out the entire engine/transmission harness. There are also slight differences under the dash for the clutch pedal position switch wiring.

Do yourself a BIG favor and replace the slave cylinder while it's apart, even though it only has 20K on it. It is a time bomb on any Ranger manual and requires that the transmission be pulled back out to change it.

No, different bolt pattern
Rangers used 4 engine patterns(not counting the short lived diesels in early 1980s)
2.3l/2.5l Lima
3.0l Vulcan
2.8l/2.9l/4.0l Cologne
2.3l Duratec

None of the 4 are interchangeable

There are also 2WD and 4x4 versions of the first 3 which are also not interchangeable, a 2WD trans won't work in a 4x4 and visa versa
2.3l Duratec never had a 4WD option transmission, they only came in 2WD

With an automatic you CAN disassemble the transmission and swap bell housings, if they are similar models, i.e. both A4LD
But.............if disassembling its just better to rebuild what you have unless the bell housing or main case is broken
