Hi all,

I recently bought a 2005 XLT 4.0ltr 4x4 and I like the truck but I am not sure if I have a tranny or some other problem or not. When accelerating from a dead stop the truck shutters, almost like it slips or binds, that's the best way I can describe it. I do not have a check engine light on. I did grease the slip yoke and it is still doing it. Tranny fluid is good and doesn't smell burnt. I am not sure what to look at next. My dad says this could be normal for a limited slip diff but it does it when I barely give it gas as well as when I floor it. Also no problems when the truck is moving and sometimes it shutters when breaking suddenly. Any advice would help a lot.

 

Definitely not normal.

As to what the issue could be, no idea. I'm of no help there.

 

I read the TSB that said it could be the slip yoke, but in the TSB it said to take the shaft off. I just pulled the metal clamp pulled the bushing back and sprayed white lithium in it till it spit back out at me.

 

You've done the common "clunk" fix of the slip yoke, though I can't remember the right lubricant to use. Did you check your rear shaft U-joints? If those are good and/or replaced, I'd start suspecting the rear axle...namely the pinion bearings.

 

Its only jerky on initial acceleration from a complete stop. There isn't any vibration, like I have experienced with bad u-joints before. Never had a pinion go personally but my buddy said when his went it made a loud whine, there isn't any odd sounds. I'm wondering if I did the slip yoke lube wrong maybe?

 

Another thing. What confuses me is it only does it during initial acceleration, no mater how much gas I give it but the more gas the more pronounced the studder. If the truck is moving at all it doesn't do it so I don't think its a fuel or air problem. It also does it a bit in reverse but not as much.

 

Update: So I ran 4 bottles of fuel injector cleaner and a quarter bottle of seafoam through it. The minor jolting has reduced and seems to be disappearing. I am pretty sure that the truck sat for awhile at the dealership so I am thinking the fuel injectors may have some buildup, the fuel filter has been replaced and whoever did it damaged the plastic ends on the fuel lines so I don't want to fuss with it.

I think this was the problem the whole time bad plug wire. Dealership missed it TWICE! Kept telling me it was the Tranny or Slip Yoke.
