auto trans shifter

'00 XLT 4.0
anyone here experienced trans. column shift lever loose and clunky?
suspect something broken in the column, have not taken it apart yet.
parts that I may need beforehand?

I don't know, but it's a cable style shifter so I think you're right on that it must be in the column somewhere. It quite possibly could be something simple like some kind of retainer or pivot pin fell out or something. You may not need any parts hopefully.

thanks

thanks John,
it's been my experiences with other ford products that the modular type column magnesium/pot metal pieces are fragile, just gotta hope for the best...

Is it like the spring mechanism is gone? You know what I mean, like when you pull it towards you it's all loose? Could just be that the spring that operates the detent is broken or detached?

It's all guesswork as I've never looked in there. I should hit the service CD's and see if I can find an illustration of that mechanism or not. If I find one, I'll post it.

hey John,
not sure what it is, could be spring is broken, looked in my factory shop manual, could be any of 6 parts.
btw, cool pic of your "rangaboat"....lol.......my '00 went thru something like that here in March this year......Honolulu set a record for most rainfall on a particular Friday, most ever recorded in an hour since records have been kept!
Aloha, Jeff

Okay, here's what I could find, but I don't know how much it helps.

Yes, well that's pretty deep considering I'm lifted on 35's, lol. It was about 3 feet deep where I crossed. The video that's a shot from is even more fun though ironic because after crossing the deepest part I got hung up in mud on the far side with my front wheels on "land"...

Hey, out there in the ocean you guys could get any amount of rain -- especially if a front stalls against your mountains/volcanos, yes?

jkl2455 Oct 22, 2006 08:14 PM

hey John,
thanks for taking the time to post the pics, I suspect item #16. i think that that slotted area where the lever engages into it is cracked, will know tomorrow, hopefully, if i jus get off my ass an take it apart yeah, living here in the middle of the Pacific does have it's downfalls weatherwise sumtimes, but at least we don't have to deal with snow and stuff, at least here on Oahu. temperature pretty much varies between hi sixties and mid nineties year rd.......

n3elz Oct 22, 2006 08:20 PM

Listen, I had just begun to like you, don't make me hate you now by telling me about the weather out there!!! It's just starting to get cold here, lol...
