Automatic interchange 96 4.0 4x4

I am trying to help out my daughters boyfriend. He just graduated this year and has limited funds although he got a job doing roofing. When he got out of school his parents helped him buy a pretty nice 96 ranger 4x4 and he was very excited about his new truck. He had it a couple months and the trans went out. His dad towed it to some shadetree type guy who said he rebuilt it for a 1000 bucks and now the trans is out again and the guy won't fix it. I'm thinking about helping the poor kid out (and putting him to work in exchange...lol) Anyway, does anybody know what trans is in it and what interchanges?

TIA

According to TRS the 95-2001 4.0 Rangers have the 4R55E. Here is the link:

Thanks Cody for the link, looks like it could also be a 5r55e depending on the code.
