automatic trans slip?

When I go wheeling I always have the same issue when I get in a rut or going up a hill.

At the dunes going up a dune the truck starts to slow down, tires stop moving and the rpms stay up and the engine is still working, just no wheel spin, none of them

When I try to drive up stuff or in ruts same thing.

It drives fine on the street, well as fine as it gets with 86k and running on 35s.

What is causing this slipping? The trans itself? the torque converter? what? Anything I can do to stop or fix this without a tranny rebuild?

I am going to tighten the bands to spec this weekend. But I doubt that will help

sounds like the torque converter. You may need to take it apart and put an aftermarket converter in to deal with the larger tires.

lifted97ranger 08-29-2007 10:16 PM

i would think automatic transmissions are designed to "unlock" when there is too much load on the tranny.....for instance, your tires are digging too much and putting the tranny in a bind.....main downfall for wheeling with an automatic IMO....

Blhde 08-30-2007 04:26 AM

What rpm are we talking about?

zabeard 08-30-2007 05:21 AM

like i can hammer it and the rpms will go up to 5000 and it still wont move, normally it is just below 4000 most of the time. sometimes it wont even climb that high, like it just doesnt have enough power which might be some other issue.

except on a manual the clutch in the ranger slips... so either way there is a down fall.

do you know of any aftermarket ones?

greygooseranger 08-30-2007 06:04 AM

Have you ever changed the trans fluid and adjusted the bands??

zabeard 08-30-2007 06:57 AM

I change the trans fluid every 25,000

I have never adjusted the bands. I want to do this this weekend.

greygooseranger 08-30-2007 07:00 AM

I see... Well hopefully that does it for you (I am doubtful as well)

EDIT: Didn't you just tow a car last week? How was the truck acting then?

it does alright when i tow, i can tell its slipping though, same when i am just driving on the street but it is ok for now.

zabeard 08-30-2007 02:21 PM

well i was talking to a good friend of mine and i think i am going to replace the valve body and torque converter. see what happens from there.

5speedin2.3 08-30-2007 02:43 PM

if i was you i would get a shift kit like my dad installed while your at it.

jrpro130 08-30-2007 02:56 PM

Shift kit helped a lot for me. Sounds like TQ converter slippage. You could even try some lucas to help put a band-aid on the problem (if you don't want to do surgery to the truck). It sounds like you also need to adjust the bands, they will not catch correctly under load if they are out of spec.

zabeard 08-30-2007 02:57 PM

i am going to adjust the bands prolly tomorrow night.

the lucas stuff works awesome, i am already using it.

When I was looking at torque converters Fuddle Racing quoted me at 200+ shipping.

Mine was custom built by http://fuddleracing.com/default.asp.

Took about a week.

Talk with John, tell him what your goals are and he will set you up.

zabeard 08-30-2007 09:00 PM

thanks blhde, i will give them a call. see what he has.

is the torque convertor going out in these 5speeds common. because i havent really heard about it on any other vehicles. i would tend to believe you have bad clutches, especially with 86k and the extra loads put on it by the lift and tires..

if you have a scan tool that can read data, your going to want to find the clutch volume index for the trans, and each clutchpack. now im sorry i caint recall what normal is but basically the higher the number the more fluid or pressure is leaking in that clutch pack and therefore less force is being applyed do to this leak or loss of pressure.

Good luck, JOSH

I think Zach just beats the piss out of his truck more than most. He has had some unique problems.

zabeard 09-02-2007 07:31 PM

because of this thread i made another of what i am going to do
