take off diff cover drain oil pop out carrier..take off shoe slide out axle slide new in put carrier back in put shoe back on fill with oil put cover on..
its a C-clip shaft so there should be a little c clip at the end of the axle holding it to the carrier if they are the like the explorer 8.8s ive never had mine apart but i sure have had the explorer 8.8 apart..

You said it right evan. I've done mine 4 times now. One time I did it in about 5 minutes at one of the offroading places we went to to get the axles off my 7.5. It's stupid easy.
The only thing I reccomend is to push in the axle you want to take out a little bit. And the bolt on the carrier is 5/32. Grease up the axle shaft too, so you don't have to replace your seals (less chance of cracking them).
1. Drain oil, should be 1/2" socket
2. Take out carrier bolt 5/32" wrench
3. Slide out carrier bolt
4. Push in axle
5. Take out c clip
6. Pull out axle shaft.

Mine was bent ont he outer flange. It was from the axle sitting on the drums and it being dropped off of the jack during install. Slipped off and bent the d side shaft.
Most bends are from accidents or hard falls, I doubt it's bent w/ a wheel/tire on there. Unless it was bent w/o the wheel on there it's kinda crazy. I think it would bend the wheel before anything.
But my drum was sitting like this /| and it should be like this || so I knew right away it was bent.
It will wobble around too, if it is bent.
If you don't see any of that, it's probably your rim.

i got mine from ford for 177.
i coulda got them for free out of my 7.5, but i didn't want to take the chance since I *threw* my 7.5 out of my truck bed.
As far as junkyards, here they make you buy the whole thing (i.e. rear axle) and they don't let you take anything apart in the yard. So I would have to buy a new axle, 400+, for a 177 part that is BRAND NEW
If your like me and just want a new part, go to ford, I could even possibly get the part number for you and you could get i off firstfordparts.com
I'd have to do some searching for the recipet though. And the left and right sides are different lengths, so be specific

I would say that you would notice it really bad...get a pic maybe? Measure the distance from all sides of the drum to the flange, make sure they are all equal, if not, your shaft is probably bent.
