A Bad case of the wobbles...Left rear axle shaft Replacement.
 

Well after getting my 8.8 axle installed I noticed my Driver side tire is wobbling a little bit. I feel it's my axle shaft, since I know my tires didn't wobble with the 7.5. I found a how to by 04lvl2 and briefly explains how to remove the axle shafts. I feel that it won't be too hard of job and can do it my self. Here are my questions.

1. Should I buy a new one or would low miles used one be good?
2. How hard is it to replace the bearings and seals for the axle shaft?
3. Do I need to grease anything or is there any type of fluid I need to add to my axle shaft prior to installing them in the axle housing?


If there is anything you suggest for you guys that have done it let me know. I found 2 axle shafts on ebay left and right one for the 8.8 that they say have 78xxx when removed from the housing. 8.8 Explorer Axle Shafts

If its pretty simple to do I would just get a new one and just replace the one side. But if it requires me to replace seals or bearings then I would just take it to a shop and have them do it. But it will be expensive. Thanks for the help guys.

You should be fine with a used one provided their not marked up so that your bearings sit on there nice and snug, and your gonna need new seals, obviously, and you should do fine on your own, just make sure the seals are in there correctly.

Oh and you should have to grease the bearings, someone may want to correct me on that but im pretty positive that you dont because their in oil anyhow.

Thanks for giving me some info. I am a little afraid of getting used ones. I might as well get one new one and order up some new bearings and seals off of ebay. I would rather have new items then used. I really don't want to half ass it.

I have the same problem from rolling a tire off the rim while doing donuts. It's not that bad, but annoys the sh!t out of me. I've been wanting to fix it but I am gonna wait until gears and stuff so I can do everything at one time.

When I look at it from the rear view mirror it's not that bad and my truck has no added vibrations and drives straight. It has a slight wobble, it just one thing that I don't want it to lead to another.
