What is wrong with my Trans? HELP!!!
2000 XLT 4X4 Auto 3.0 Ranger
When truck is cold trans works flawlessly.
When truck is warm it occasionally will not engage into Drive when moving from Park or Neutral to Drive. Sometimes you have to try it a couple of times or even rev the motor a bit when in Drive to get it to engage. Once it does engage the trans works flawlessly again, no slips, perfect shifts etc...
Because the problem is sporatic, the local mechanic tried to flush it with the BG machine... but it did not help. (Note that he did NOT change the trans filter)
Also... when the trans will not engage into Drive, you can drop it to 1 and it will engage, then slip it back to Drive and everything is fine again.
Is this trans shot? Can I fix it without replacing/rebuilding the whole thing?

I just had the trans flushed with a BG machine.
To my dismay they did not change the filter and said it was unecessary. I disagree however and I am thinking of just changing the filter myself.
Please note though the the problem existed before the flush and it has not gotten any better or worse.

Reviving this thread as I am searching for the answer as well.
Although my problem is a little different.
When the tranny is cold I have exactly the same symptoms.
The truck starts moving then slips into what kind of feels like neutral but you know you have to let off cause of the emminent slam into gear. Even with the slam it slips right back out. After which a putting in park or into 1st usually solves the problem.
For me once the tranny is hot... no problems.
BTW I have been having similar problems but much less severe for a little while. A few times had a slip when I took off then the slam into gear and all was good after.
Prompted me to change the fluid and filter, and now its worse.
In searching I found that the " EPC solenoid " could be bad. Any thoughts?
