Do you have a Torsen L/S? Just wondering why you think 4.88's won't work.

The front Dana 35 is not reverse rotation, it's standard rotation. So the gears you have linked for the front won't work.

Yeah... 4.88s are available. The only reason they wouldn't work is if you have a 31 spline rear axle with a torsen.

only Level II FX4s have torsen. you should be fine. i believe you have a trac-loc LS.

If you have the torsen, you can't gear past 4.10 without removing the carrier, and going either open or some sort of locker... The center pin is a block, not a pin like traditional setups.

If you have future plans for bigger tires, gear one more up, so 4.88's. Save yourself the headache. Plus the shorter the gear ratio, the easier it is on the trans and transfer case

the 31 spline was made til 2010 I think, and the torsen was available til then as well... 2009 was the last year it was made it and it had to ordered, if I recall correctly...

If you aren't 100% sure, then you should probably make sure you know what you have.

This may sound like a silly question... but how esactly do i check what kinda rear end i got on my truck?? I remember Shane posted pics a while back and if the axle tapers in near the rear drums it was the 31 spline and if it didnt it was the 28?

Seems familiar. I was digging through pictures of my sport trac but it is hard to tell. I would say the 31 spline does taper a little though. Someone else will be able to tell you the diameter of the axle tubes I'm sure.

I think the 28 spline is roughly 2.75", and the 31 spline is 3.25", tapering to 2.75" near the ends.

Check the Tag attached to the Rear Diff Cover…

Tube size is as stated earlier 3.25”.

You can also look on the drivers door jamb and check the axle code. For example mine is an R7 IIRC.

Park next to another ranger and compare. The 31 spline is noticeably thicker than the 28, that is if you don'r feel like measuring.

My sport trac came stock with 4.10 gears and 30" tires, and turned 2400 RPM at 70mph. It worked great in town and on the freeway, it puts the SOHC in a great RPM range for power. I re-geared it to 4.88s with 33s and it turned 2600RPM at 70mph, still worked great and pulled awesome, though a little higher than necessary. I loved that setup in Oregon where the highest speed limit was 65mph. Here is it 70mph and people cruise at 80+ so it wasn't ideal.
I have 245/75 with 4.10s. Going 70mph, im at exactly 2500 rpms......

Donate bigger tires today to help increase highway gas mileage for ranger owners everywhere. lol.
