blown rear end?
so i backed out of my driveway last night and i felt a jerk and heard a clunk. then pulled it back into my driveway and it clunked more and sounded like the teeth in the differential where grinding at each other. anyway today i tried it again and this time the drive shaft was spinning but nothing else was happening.
so could it be the rear differential? or the whole axle together? i have been mudding alot so that is probably what caused this. so what could i do to make sure this doesnt happen again. thanks |
So driveshaft spinning and the truck isn't moving? Yup its done.
|
the differential or the whole axle?
|
Probably just the diff. Just take the over off and see what falls out.
|
I highly doubt it is the entire axle....as Christian said, go with the most logical assumption. Take the diff cover off, and check it out.
|
hahaha cool thanks.
what could i do to make sure this doesnt happen again? ive been spinning my tires a lot cause its been muddy everywhere... |

Obviously you should ease up a little offroad, or upgrade :) At least you have the cahones to admit it's your fault, that says huge amounts of good things about you, friend. |
Check what axle you have first. It is probably perfect timing to swap in an Explorer axle. Search for "Explorer Axle". If you don't have that much cash you could probably through in a Ranger 8.8 but just make sure you stay with the same gear ratio so you don't have to regear the front.

im not doing any burnouts on pavement..hahaha i dont think my truck would even to that.
im pretty sure its the 7.5 would the 8.8 be better? |

i had that idea from the start. i think its time to get rid of those old drum brakes...there going out anyway so maybe i can get an axle with the disc brakes... im reading up about it now.. thanks guys. |
somehow you trashed your ring and pinion, so it would seem.
pull the diff cover and see what the carnage is (and post a pic, we LOVE carnage!). the whole axle won't be wrecked, but it will be far cheaper, and easier for the shade-tree mechanic to replace it as an assembly, and upgrade while you're at it. |
I'll bet it's the spider gears or pinion shaft, most likely both. That's how my 7.5" & 8.5" bit the dust.
|
I just got my truck, from the something happening.
had to get the whole new axle shaft and main gear put in 610 bucks for the parts... |
My truck just did this last night...I'll take the diff cover off and take pics....
If anyone has some parts pm me...please |
the 8.8 is a very strong axle so if you have the 7.5 make sure you change it, you will not regret it :)
|
It is an 8.8 ls 4.10.....and I drive it nicely wheel it moderately.....Im pissed...Ive been dumping money left and right.
|
you never take it offroad at all?
|
"wheel it moderately"
