Clutch Problems

Hey guys, I need to bleed my clutch(so my friend tells me lol). But I'm not quite sure how to do this. He said to open the bleeder valve and pump the clutch a couple of times close the valve and see if its good repeat if nessacery. Well, wheres the bleeder valve? I have a 95 Ranger XL, 2wd, 2.3L. Thanks for the help guys

Your bleeder screw is on the driver side of the trans, above the rubber "inspection cover". You'll see a black plastic hose going into the bellhousing right below the bleeder(about 2" or so). Bleeder should take an 8mm.

The following is a short how-to.......

-top off fluid to notch.
-open bleeder to let gravity do the draining. when it's full on fluid, close screw
-top off fluid to notch.
-have an assistant slowly push on the clutch pedal all the way to the floor, have assistant hold that position.
-open bleeder. brake fluid will squirt out, so be prepared.
-top off fluid to notch, and feel the clutch pressure.
-repete this cycle if needed.



You may or may not already know this....but these hydraulic clutch systems are weak, and and fail quite often. I'm on slave cyl #4 right now, and just changed the master cyl. So those are both possibilitys to what's wrong if bleeding it won't fix it permanently.

*When my master cyl was taking a turn for the worst(@85k), I'd bleed the clutch, and ran good for 200miles, then started having no pedal pressure. I'd bleed it, and it'd fix it temperarily(several times). bleeding it would eventually not fix it, so....on to replacing it.

If bleeding only temperarily fixes it, I'd change out the master cyl......since it's easy. If you need to replace the slave cyl, you need to drop the trans to gain access to the slave cyl. Parts alone: master cyl($80-120). slave cyl($70-90)

hmm im kind of a new mechanic :P Im pretty broke and cant really afford shop labour. Armed with a chiltons manual would I be able to replace these cylinders?

yes......when I first did my slave cyl, I used a chiltons/haynes....and it definately helped as i've never done anything with hydraulic clutches before. The other slave swaps I did myself w/o the book. The install on the master is really really bland.....it's almost year specific i think. I mean...it definately helped, but no pics...and pics help.

I am no mechanic, but am always working on a vehicle. I'm not broke so i can afford shop labor.....but would rather not. I take pride in saying i've never had my truck in a shop, other than a check engine light, exhaust, and balancing wheels/tires. So get out there and start wrenchin'! lol......find a friend who's mechanically inclined to give you a hand. I think a slave swap w/ labor is around $500 or so...could be wrong. I priced it out like 4 years ago. lol.
