Brakes
Pedal feels fine. Stops fine with truck on and off. We managed to get it on reverse when it was running. It went through all the gears when it wasn't. It's a1999 ranger xlt 4x4 4.0. It's an automatic
OK, so I am misunderstanding what is happening here.
You mentioned you replaced brake pads and shoes then truck wouldn't "go", I assumed it wouldn't move, because a brake was locked.
So you are saying the truck will roll forwards and backwards by YOU pushing it
But will not "go" when you put the Automatic transmission in to Drive, right?
Brakes and transmission have nothing in common, so transmission problem will be a separate issue not related to you changing brake parts.
Now if you mean Reverse will move the truck backwards but Drive won't move it forward then one of your Rear Brake shoes is locked.
Rear brakes don't hold well going backwards, they only hold tight going forward.
So pull off the rear Drums and have a look
Rear brake parts have specific Right and Left Parts, if you use a Right hand part on the Left side brakes will lock up

I took off the little switch that goes on the brake pedal. That's when it stopped going into gear. I put that back on and it worked fine after that.
So the actual Shift lever on the steering column wouldn't move out of Park
Yes, the Brake Light switch being remove would keep Shifter Locked
When you put your foot on the Brake pedal(required on an automatic) the Brake Lights come on, and the power for the Brake Lights also goes to the shift interlock solenoid.
It is under steering column
This pulls out the PIN that is holding shift lever in Park
Most vehicles that have a Shift Interlock also have a way to manually unlock the shift lever in case solenoid fails
Check you year in these manuals: https://www.ranger-forums.com/genera...1-models-3747/
