Brakes messing up

I dont know whats up with my brakes, i searched around and some said to bleed them but there shouldnt be any air in them....They are starting to get spungy (sp) I noticed it a couple weeks ago, i would start slowing down and about 1/2 way down is when it actually started slowing down....and then like something felt like it downshifted (automatic) but it would jump forward......now my brake pedal goes down like 1/2-3/4 the way before it really starts stopping, i dont know if my master cylinder is going out, or if i have a brake caliper that is messing up, but im debating on just taking it to ford to get checked out....We do have vaccume assist brake boosters dont we? I have fluid and everything....so any ideas?? Today / tomorrow im gonna jack it up and take the wheels off and check it all out, i just put brand new rotors and pads on not but 3 or 4k miles ago....so they're good

Rocky I'm thinking it's some fluke in ohio weather. My brakes are acting the same way and I put new pads on about 300 miles ago and the pedal was fine. Now it's getting spongey and I really have to push the pedal far to stop. I'm actually in the process of changing the rear shoes and cleaning everything up. Then I'm going to bleed the whole system in hopes to get regular braking back.

Yeah, there for awhile i was like "damn why is it so hard to stop" like normaly it didnt take long now it feels like it just wants to keep going, it finally stops, just spungy, and feels really wierd

Is that the brake shoe stuck to the drum??!!

0RangerEdge2 03-12-2006 04:33 PM

It's not stuck well, it wasn't. They rusted together overnight because I limped it home in the rain. I pulled it off and then cleaned up the drum.

FireRanger 03-12-2006 04:55 PM

Well, either way, it is supposed to attached to the brake, not floating around to ruste to the drum. I'd say you found the root of your problem.

Im gonna pull mine in the garage tomorrow and check out my rear brakes, when i would hit the brakes it sounded like something was clicking or something, so i dont know what it is, but they are really squishy, so im gonna have to see what i can find, i really dont want to take it to ford, but brakes are something i dont want to go out...lol

This is a common problem. Rwenzinger had a simular event, It happened to me 3 times ( I'm in the snowbelf of Buffalo here ).

Theres a common issue with the rear drums lockign and rusting in cold/damp weather. Condensation gets into the drums.. and its ' over '. This happened even after I changed to bendix pads. RayBestos aren't any better.. Still happened.

I have pics of mine that look simular to yours but I had to ( literally ) take a 30lb sledge to get one of them off and an air chizel to get the other side.

I made a jerry-rigged gear puller from a 2x4 and some metal I had laying around. It kinda loosened the drum up then I had to wiggle them around to get them off.

I had the rears "serviced" 3x under warrenty and once 15k ago.. I'm probably
due again...
I had my ebrake stick on the drivers side and it got up to about 550degrees too woot.
Gotta love infared thermometers.

I'm thinking wtf is that smell... someones truck stinks.. then I'm thinking I wonder
if my efan wiring is burning(was 2nd day of efan).
Got to my dads and the Wheel was about 200degrees... drum was 550 at hottest spot.

Im doin an axle swap...I just got the explorer axle today...I've been running with destroyed drums for the past 2 months...no pads, broken springs...all f*cked up...so I've been goin through front disk pads like...every 2 months hahah...been to lazy to put breaks in the back..but now Im gettin round to it..swapping axles to get disk breaks, Ill take pics of my drums for ya soon..

Btw...your problem? your problem is that your still runnin drums lol ;)

What is the % of front / back brakes.....like 80-20? or how does that work, because i know in snow my front tires are the only ones that slide, or jerk (abs) Im gonna check out my rears this weekend, i got caught up in something the other day, and i dont want to tear them apart during the week and not have a truck to take to work....

Did any of you guys notice a weird noise at all coming from the rear. Mine started out squeaking when i backed up and now it sound like something is rolling a round and like its sparking. I did a little test to see if the rear brakes still worked by coasting at about 10 to 15 mph and slowly appling the ebrake and i had to put it almost to the last click before they even started slowing my truck down. I normal dont use my ebrake but before i use to get it half way before i start having to put pressure to get it to go any farther and now it will go all the way down to where i have one click left with ease and the last click is near to impossible without putting all my weight into. My truck is goning in next saturday to have the fronts done and probably the backs to but i am still am curious where if that is in fact whats causing the noise to come from

D. 03-19-2006 08:46 PM

My main clue as far as noise.. It made the same sound as bad universal joints on a driveshaft. Whenever I pushed in my clutch while rolling.. ' thump '.

04edge 03-19-2006 09:09 PM

I will have the guy doing my brakes on saturday check it out. but its weird because it comes from the right rear.

92 Ranger 03-20-2006 07:49 PM

the braking ratio is 70 30... is it condensation or a leaking wheel cylinder? thats a bummer dude.. could be air, a leak somweres.. or the rusting thing.. there shouldnt be any condensation in there but hey who knows
