Breaking drum springs
I just replaced the springs in my rear brakes about a month ago. And it sounds like another one is broken. I don't have time to check it out right now, but I'm going to pull the drums off tomorrow.
Is there anything that would cause the springs to break besides just wear and tear? Something not adjusted right or anything? |
Which springs?

this is the reason i swapped to and exploder axle never have to deal with drums again

I have never heard of the springs breaking. Those springs are pretty tough. Why do you think the springs are broken?

springs break from metal fatigue, but they should last longer than that. id pull the drums before you buy parts, it may not be a broken spring at all.

I went thought 2 sets of springs in less than 2 years on my drums and 2 sets of pad, they were set up right both times idk why they failed so badly

It was the very bottom spring last time. But I replaced all of them on both sides. Its just making a metal on metal scratching/screeching and its not a consistent sound but it doesn't go away. Turning increases the sound a bit. It sounds identical to last time. I still have the old springs so hopefully its the opposite side so I don't have to buy a new spring pack.

Me too, thank god for warrenties. I redid my drums last fall, and I checked them a week ago, one cylinder (which was new in the fall) was leaking, and a bunch of springs broke. Warrenty FTW!

Any other cause's besides regular wear and tear? And I'll look into the explorer axle. Prices for everything are usually higher in Canada. Not sure how much parts go for at scrap yards.
Can anyone give me a rough idea of how much it would go for in Canada? |
ive broken the bottom spring before, but i was goofing around and line locked it, that and they were filled with mud ha

Took the drums off last night. The bottom spring broke again, after a month. Also the other side's wheel cylinder needs to be replaced. The rubber end caps are all soft and are leaking a bit. I really hate these drums brakes. I'm going to look for an explorer axle.

I have had an issue with the adjuster coming off the post.

Talked to one of my soldiers who's also a mechanic. And fixed my brakes. I replaced the spring, and the wheel cylinder. Adjusted the brakes properly (which i didn't do last time and probably caused that spring to break). And bled the system. Works so much better now. Before the brakes were spongy and then would just lock up. Now there tight and I can actually stop. I think they should be good to go for a little while at least.
