What gears & locker to get?
Hey everyone, I am in need on new gears for my rear end & a locker also...
I am wanting to get 4.88 gears & a locker, the locker doesn't have to be name brand like Detroit or what not, but something that will have both of my rear wheels spinning at the same time, instead of the 1 wheel peel.... lol
My question is, could someone give me a direct link to the gears & I think that I may need like some kind of kit or something to install the gears, & a locker...
THANKS,
Brenton

detroit truetrac is one of the best limited slips u can buy. gear driven it'll never wear out and is reaonable priced at $350-400.
a traclock is great and easy to find but the clutches wear out over time. u can rebuild them with additional clutchs and a heavier Z-spring and the cost to purchase a used one and rebuild is around $150-200.
moving on to lunchbox lockers. these are a direct drop in for an open carrier. they are weaker than a full carrier locker but are cheap and easy to install. Aussie locker and power trax along with detroit all make versions of these. expect to pay about $200-400 for one of these.
next is a full locker like a detroit. these types are grear for serious wheel but will also chirp the tires around turns. a little pricey at $400-600.
lastly is a selectible varient. the ARB is probaly the best known and widely used. it uses air to acutate between open and fully locked. air lines are prone to damage however and require an air compressor or air supply. then theres an offering from ox locker which is a cable actuated unit.
and for a sub section on selectible lockers. these switch from limited slip to full locker. AFAIK there are only two types avaible from Aubrun in the ECTED and detroit under the electric lock or something.
all the selectible lockers are very pricey at $600-1000...

itll be my guess you have teh 28 spline 8.8 as well. also with 35s you may wanna look into 5.13 gears, but 4.88s will work too. just might be hard to find for your axles, im not really sure. when it comes to a locker try to get the best you can, cause its $$ well spent. i have the detroit locker, fully mechanical and i dont worry about my tires slipping at all. at 1st youll feel your tires kinda drag around corners but you get used to it and as long as you dont drive like a mad man youll be ok. and of course the imfamous or famous depending on point of view is the detroit pop. every so often itll engage and make a loud pop. heres a link to randys ring and pinion, should get you off in the right foot.

If you feel rich get the Ox locker. manual cable, no air lines or plumbing to worry about, no electricity to worry about and strong as hell.
If you are looking at a cheaper alternative, I say a aussie locker or like i have, a genuine gear quick lock. they are the same as the powertraxx lockright, just a little cheaper alternative...

All these things were covered in more detail in this thread:

You only have 31 spline if you have an FX4, or if you changed your axle like I did.

35" tires with open tread and a locker on a 4x2 are often more capable than 32's and no locker on a 4x4, lol!
I for one am converting my truck to a 4x4 because I like it so much and want to keep what I've already done. Sounds like a lot of work and I'm sure it will be -- but I like the idea of THIS truck with a SAS and just keeping it until I can't maintain it anymore, building it more and more over time.

ok FOUR carrier types.
Open, lets one axle shaft spin completly when traction is lost.
Limited slip, sends a small percentage of power to the slipping axle shaft when traction is lost.
Locker, when specified by the type, the differential full locks sending 100% of the power to ech axle shaft.
Spool, Always locked all the time. both axles always spin at the same exact speed, even when turning...

most the guys i know with the arb wish they would have gotten somthing else... always waiting for the compressor.. likes to unlock at the worst time... the electric is a nice choice, come stock on trd toyotas and have no problems... i run a 9" rear with a detroit, best upgrade yet.. no electric for mine yet... broke two 7.5" axles in one year, with 33's, good luck with a 8.8.... all the money your gonna spend on it you could have a 9"......

8.8 is not a bad axle. for up to 35s the 8.8 is plenty with a couple small things.
7.5 is obviously weak as hell.
ARBs I have heard about a lot of problems. leaking oil, cylenoids going out, compressors failling, and as for the ected as I stated, just something bothers me about having an electrical unit under water.
overall for you brenton I say an aussie locker. they are a lock right equivalent and ive heard they have EXCELLENT customer support.
