any special tools for a auto trans rebuild?

I have not counted out the idea of doing this myself, but was curious if there is anything special to these transmissions that an auto transmission of 20 years ago would not also have. Have access to a good amount of tools and some specialty stuff, but wanted to make sure I would not have to buy something like a $500 rotomer adjuster to go with my squeegee sharpener.

I have been to several transmission shops that could not properly rebuild/fix my transmissions. So i feel that if they can't do it properly then i wouldnt try to do it yourself unless you have done them before!

A guy at my old work rebuilt his automatic transmission. He said as long as you understand what you're taking apart you wont have a problem. So I bet it will be fun!

Anyways, something being too hard is only a reason to try harder.

autos are new to me....I can do a manual transmission without too much trouble..it just comes apart and goes back together and the areas that are worn are obvious!

Have not completely figured it out what to replace yet. Here is the rest of my resources...and why I want to attempt it myself. My father was a mechanic for a local chevy dealer in the 60s-70s. My cousin currently works as a mechanic at one of the local ford dealers.

This weekend my cousin will be coming by with one of the ford computer readers to pull codes. As I have been churning all this stuff over in my brain I put 2 things together that I already knew....but completed a bigger picture. I am now thinking that its the pump itself or a pressure related problem. First...as I understand it there are more than one band set for the gears...but would not expect all of them to go at once....and so fast when it worked fine and smooth up to that point. Second...this transmission leaks...and leaks bad. Since I bought it. I actually had to make a deflector out of aluminum to keep it off the exhaust because it was smoking so bad.....but guess what. At the point in time that it slipped to the point of no longer going the puddle of fluid under the truck is gone..in fact it was surprisingly not leaving anything under the truck from where I pulled in when it broke down.

not there yet...but its given me a real good trail to inspect!
