so i got a 3.0 2wd ranger edge i have 33s and want to get more power and gas mileage on the interstate. I was planning on putting in some gears , so i went to a shop and they said that since i got 7.5 with 3.73 gears my next best option is 4.56 but they said that they will use MORE gas and burn that 3.0 out because of the rpms

so what are my options? i have no idea on what to do.

 

i would go find yourself a 8.8 w/ 4.10 gears installed already......swap that in since the 8.8 is a stronger axle and doing that will only cost you about $200 compared to $275 for just the new gears for a weak 7.5 axle...

 

well here the problem about that too, he said that 4.10 would not make much difference

Your mechanic is full of little green worms.

I use 4.56 with 35's and the RPMS are fine. He should run the numbers. 33's wouldn't be much different.

You might or might not use more gas -- but you'll definitely like driving it better.

 

ok, well is it better to change to 8.8 and run 4.10 or just stay with 7.5 and go with the 4.56

yes i understand, sorry but i was just asking what would be better, its two different setups and each of them have to have their ups and downs

 

the 7.5's are WEAK......anytime you have a 7.5 and you have problems with it you should upgrade to a 8.8....

 

if you have the ability swap to an 8.8 with the 4.10s, if not and youre just going to settle with gears, get 4.10s in your 7.5

 

but how much difference will it make?

 

thats not a big jump from 3.73 to a 4.10

 

7.5 and 8.8 28 spline the axles shafts and tube size are the same. Ring and pinion is the only strength gained.

I would still go 8.8 and 4.10s quick easy swap and will get results.

 

ok so will i have a major jump in rpms with 4.10 and will they let me stay in overdrive while going uphills?

ok look.

new tire size / stock tire size * current gear ratio = new ratio needed.

so for example

33" / 30" * 3.73 = 4.103 which is really close to 4.10s so it will drive close to stock.

that is an example figure it out for yours. here is mine

35 / 31 * 4.10 = 4.692 and I went with 4.56s and have no complaints.

 

and youve been told that its 8.8 with 4.10s 4 times now....

 

ok ill go with 4.10 then and 8.8 if i can find one at the local junk yards, sorry for trouble guys i didnt mean to be stubborn or anything

thus 8.8 and 4.10s is a good choice for your truck... now you see the math above how we got the answer.

I guess I'm the only one that thinks you'll be disappointed with 33's, a 3.0L, 4.10s. I'd do 4.56s at the least, you probably won't even notice a difference going from 3.73s to 4.10s.

 

any hair braned fart knocker with basic tools can swap in a 8.8 for a 7.5....

 

well i didnt say 4.56 are not good but if he is so concerned about gas mileage and rpm i am not sure 4.56s will be good for him
