clunk in driveshaft, axles or somewhere else?
 
i have a 2001 Ranger 4.0L automatic, and I think this is an driveshaft problem, but I'm not entirely sure. When I am starting out from a dead stop, there are two felt clunks. If I start out real slow there is only one, but then give it a little more throttle and there is the other clunk. When stopping, just as the truck stops, there is also a felt clunk. Its not really a clunk, as there is no noise, but its more of a jerk kinda clunk thing.

From searching, I'm thinking the James Duff Traction bars will help. If so, i'm not sure on the part number, is it 5305 or 5306? Any thoughts?

It sounds like either SLIP YOKE or a bad U-Joint, but usually a u joint will clank.

I've ignored my slipyoke bumping for almost 8 years now (since new).

yeah grease your slip yoke and see if it goes away..

any tips on how to grease the slip yoke? like how to get to it, or what would need to be disassembled?

I think you gotta pull off the driveshaft and lube it up with some special shiz from Ford.

ok, so am i correct in thinking that the driveshaft is in two pieces because of being a 4wd extra cab model? if so, would it be front and rear driveshaft-Single Cardan type U-joint, or front and rear driveshaft-Double Cardan type U-joint?

Dont know about the newer rangers but my ex cab is a 2 piece single driveshaft. With only one u-joint at each end.
