Clutch? Slave? Master?
 

So I have a problem with my 2000 2wd 3.0l. The clutch is starting to grab just above the carpet on the floor, and its been getting extremely difficult to get the thing into gear if the truck is sitting still. I just changed the tranny fluid so that is not the issue.

A buddy suggested the Clutch Master is going out. Anyone else have any thoughts on the matter?

How old is the clutch? The slave cylinder is a common problem with Rangers. With a truck as old as yours I would change the master, slave and clutch depending on how old it is.

I have no idea. I've had the truck for a month now. It doesn't slip unless im doing something stupid. Ill assume its on the stock clutch with 104K.

I've heard about the slaves being crud. Are there good aftermarket ones out there? Or is going to the stealership a better option?

Guess its time to dig out the tranny jack...


Oh, and it grabs fully at about mid stroke like normal, but it will start to roll the truck just off the floor. Like the master is bleeding back into the resivoir? Fluid is normal and fairly recent as well.

I think the aftermarket ones are crap as well. I just recently changed my clutch and slave with an OEM replacement. I used Centerforce before but decided against it this time.

$235 for a kit ain't bad at all. Thanks alot for the help man! I might get an upgraded friction disk cause I tend to beat on things from time to time. Soon as racing season picks back up i can beat on the track whore again.

Well if you want to try an aftermarket brand then you have Zoom Clutch, Centerforce and Spec Clutch to choose from. There may be a few more but that's all I remember at the moment. If I were to use an upgraded kit again I would run Spec.

I have a spec in the track whore. I like it. Kinda iffy to drive being a soild hub. But it grabs like a muther.

I think I'll just stay oem tho. $235 is a good deal for a full kit.

Spec has some milder kits.

Good luck man. Remember that if you replace the master you have to bench bleed it.

a good test to see if it your slave is to pump the clutch up and see if it helps. is your fluid level low?

Changed the master today, figured go for the easiest stuff first. Everything seems to be working great. Clutch now engages about mid pedal, and not on the floor. And it shifts like butter.

Those are a ROYAL PAIN IN THE A$$ to bleed. It took me 30 mins to change it, and 45 to bleed it. That's just not right...

And I picked up one for only $43 bucks from a local store. I think it was a good deal all around.

The fluid level was right on spec. But it came out of the reservoir blacker than night...

Hope this will help someone else who will encounter a similar problem.

When the 2nd clutch on the truck(1st time I replaced it since I bought it) started going out I got the lovely black crude crap coming out when I was bleeding it. In the same month threw in a new Centerforce clutch kit, master and slave.

oh sad...


Well.. Ill just keep on nursing it untill I get a free weekend.

the slave in my 02 went out and when i bled it i got white gunk coming out. but even aftr bleeding it and refilling the master it leaked out of the slave into the tranny. and there was clicking in my pedal when i was engaging the clutch. after awhile my clutch pedal felt like it was just hanging there.
