Should I replace the clutch?

Icon2 Should I replace the clutch?

Ok guys heres the dilemma. Whithin the last month I have had to add brake fluid 2 or 3 times, and I've noticed there is fluid leaking around where the 5 speed shifter meets the trans, There is a circle piece there at the housing and it is wet with fluid.
And sometimes when shifting the truck jerks some, like Im dropping the clutch but Im not.

And this morning my clutch was letting out CLOSE to the floorboard, I thought it was low on fluid, so I checked and it wasnt..I had a mechanic friend say it was the SLAVE CYL, so shouldnt I just replace the clutch, slave, throwout bearing and everything?

oh i have 95,555 miles on the orig clutch.

best bet is too replace everything you just mentioned while you have the tranny out. Spend a little more money now and save yourself some aggravation later!

Leaving to go get a new clutch $385+ slave cyl aint to bad huh

whew whered you buy it from? I got a sachs kit, and new slave for only $250.

Um actually guy told me wrong, sais now its more bc its a 4wd..
So i argued with him and out the door its $550 for a LUK clutch, labor, and slave cyl and resurface the flywheel.

Is that to bad guys?

For clutch and Labor..I'd say it's ok. Ford lists labor time at 5.8 hours. What's he upping the labor or the parts? It shouldn't change really. All he has to do is disconnect the front drive shaft and the tcase shifter.

He quoted me $385 first and a slave, Then after I leave the truck and call later, he said it was more bc he has to take the Tcase off and to resurface the flywheel its more. He said its $618 after all that..And I said no way, talked him down to $550...Hey what can I do?

wow... i would have just replaced the slave cylinder since that sounds like all that was giving you problems...

On the phone he said it was $385 including clutch and labor WITHOUT the slave cyl and resurfacing the flywheel...Then after I dropped the truck off and call later to see the final price, he said it was going to be more and by the time i asked him not to do it for the $618 he said, he already had the transmission out...So then I just talked him down to $550, which is what another shop quoted me total..

So im gonna make sure I get my OLD clutch back just to make sure he dont stiff me.

If I had to remove the transmission anyways to replace the slave cylinder, makes since just to replace everything you know

only replace the slave man you shouldnt need to replace the clutch at 100,000 that sounds a bit early for that. i had my old one at 165,xxx and it was fine...

my engine was out at 93k and my clutch and flywheel looked brand new. there is no way you should need a clutch unless you tow a lot or are really hard on it.





and i takes 30 min to remove the trans and transfer case. i know, i have done it in my garage

550 is a pretty good price out the door, while in the Army I had the dealer do mine (was on leave, had to get it done ASAP) and paid near 1k for it. Slave went out, replaced everything.

No way I'd put a clutch with near 100k back in, not worth the effort to tear it all apart who knows when, especially if paying labor.

you dont have to even touch the clutch to get at the slave...unless you want to that is you prolly dont need it replaced but hey its your ranger lol. a slave is about 60 where i got mine and dropping the tranny and replacing it was so easy. 2 bolts hold the slave in 2 BOLTS!

so what your saying is, i just screwed the pooch? and spent $550 vs $100...Well dang, that sucks...Guess lesson learned

No, unless you were DIYing it. Why would you pay a few hundred in labor and put an old clutch back in? It may look good but if your pressure plate goes there goes another few hundred in labor.....all this is paying someone labor of course, if you DIY that's a simple matter of time, not money.

I doubt anyone is going to do an internal slave for 100 bucks, all the cost in a clutch job is taking the trans apart, not so much the parts.....what you did was smart preventative maintenance. I did reuse a clutch once when my wife wrecked her 01 and the 04 needed a new one, but the wrecked clutch had 20k on it.

You did the right thing by replacing the clutch when the slave went out. No matter what anyone tells you they are wrong. For a few hunderd more bucks you have a brand new slave and clutch. You are good to go for a along time.

As far as the price goes you got a smokin deal. I paid $880 for mine with clutch with a 36/3yr warranty.

oh dang, I didnt even think about a warrenty. I hope that guys gives me one..I am having a LUK put it...Since I jewed him down some, i hope he didnt screw with my truck...We'll see tomm.

Everyone should use LUK, they are the industry standard. They wont screw with your truck... atleast they shouldnt as a business.

I would call and ask about a warranty tomorrow.

well its your truck man lol and only you know how much wear your clutch has so you should know if it has to be replaced and if it didnt oh well its to late now lol.

Why not replace it while he was there...Preventative in my mind.
