4X4 problems

Hi guys I am new to the forum and I have been reading alot. My 4x4 has not been working everything seems to be working properly but the tires wont spin. I went underneath it today and 4x4 engages and all the front axle moves but the tires wont spin, everybody on here says the hubs are no good so I think that is what the problem is. So I think I am going to replace them with the AVM manual hubs from tellico4x4.com. I was just wondering if you all think this would fix the problem, because everything seems to be working but the tires just wont spin.
Went a rechecked it today with an extra set of eyes and I noticed that the passenger side hub seems to be locked in. When i checked to see if the 4X4 was working the drivers side turns but the passengers side wont turn. Does the hub need to be locked in and turning on the drivers side before the passengers side works? I know for sure that both hubs are junk, but I cant understand why the passengers side shaft isnt spinning. thanks

For future reference post what year truck you have because that would change the advice given.

Since you have a 98. I had the same problem. Remove the little metal tabs inside the hub. Then the shafts will spin all the time even when you are not in 4x4 which causes a little extra wear but the fix cost's nothing and only takes 15 minutes. You don't have to take off the tires and a screwdriver and some pliers will get the job done.

If you have an open diff up front, and you probably do.......an open diff will let the wheel that takes less force to turn spin freely. If you have a messed up hub with an open diff and it only takes one hub to be messed up, then you're 4x4 won't work because one of the hubs is letting the axle spin freely, and the open diff is sending all the power to that wheel because it takes very little force to turn it as opposed to the side that the hub is locked in on with the weight of the vehicle to pull.

I got the hubs put on and the drivers side is working but I cant get the passenger's side driveshaft to spin. I have the car up in the air and I dont know if there is has to be pressure on the tire to get it to move or what. I was wondering if anyone knows what could cause this.

Hmm... not really sure. When I put the AVM's on my truck I just put them on, locked them and went out and tried the 4x4 drive. Worked right away.

If for whatever reason they aren't working I would say take the hubs off and put them back on. And just try driving it around.

The hubs work great its just the passengers side shaft that spins the wheel is not turning. The drivers side spins great. I dont know what would cause this.

Maybe I'm confused but if the passenger side shaft is spinning and the wheel isn't.... I would think the problem lies in the hubs.

And how can you tell that the passenger side shaft is spinning if the tire is on the hub assembly is together? I'm not a total guru when it comes to trucks... but to me this totally seems like either exactly what an open differential should do (1 wheel spinning) or the hub isn't grabbing if you have something stopping the driver side.

Have you tried driving this? Or is still blocked up? I guess I'm somewhat confused on how your testing everything out. Maybe go into a bit more detail there.

Sorry about that. I put the manual locking hubs and and when they are in the locked position When I have the car up on jacks the drivers side front 4X4 works properly but the passengers side does NOT. It seems like the drivers side shaft is kicking in and working properly but the passengers sides drive shaft wont spin anymore. Hubs are not the issue anymore because I replaced them with the manual ones and they work great!!

Sounds to me like thats your open differential doing exactly what it was designed to do. If you want both wheels to spin accordingly, you'll need to put a locker in that dude.
