Well as the title states, my manual transmission sounds like its full of rocks especially if you are in fourth or fifth gear. When you lift off the throttle its gets really loud just sounds like pieces are loose. The strange thing is it does not leak any fluid at all and has no signs that it ever has and still shifts just fine goes into every gear easily. So am I screwed or do I have a chance at saving this one? How much is an average used one worth? Thanks.

 

Is it full of fluid? That will kill these manuals fast.

 

Well I would assume so since it hasn't ever leaked and just gradually got worse over about 200 miles. I would go out there now and check it but I just found out I am going to have to have a rod put in my hand to fix my break. Which really sux I won't be driving the truck either for quite sometime either since its my right hand. Oh well.

 

Don't let a little broken hand keep you from driving.

I got a herniated disc and a prolapsed disc crushing the spinal canal. I can barely walk but I am still driving.

 

Never assume anything with fluids. they can dissapear very slowly over time and the residue gets washed away by driving in rain/snow.

 

Yup it's low. I got my wife to help me since my hand is broke.

 

Your lack of fluid has likely wrecked a bearing or two. I test drove a 79 F150 4x4 back in 85, it was making similar noises in 3rd (granny gear 4 spd.), I told the dealer I'd take it if they would fix the tranny. They quickly fixed it and it was a great truck, and served me well for 80,000 + miles (had right at 100,000 when I bought it). A competent independent shop should be able to handle it without breaking the bank.

 

Well so far so good. Not a huge amount of metallic debris in the fluid or on the little magnetic plug. I didn't go very far with it making a lot of noise. I got my fingers crossed.

Normally I would pull and fix the trans myself but with my hand all messed up I don't see that happening anytime soon. Today the weather is nasty so I don't plan on going out to test it hopefully tomorrow I will get a chance.

 

I believe you probably saved yourself a lot of needless damage by not driving it far in that condition. I can't believe the number of vehicles I encounter, which are making horrendous noises, and the driver appears oblivious to all of it.

 

Its cheaper and easier to ignore it then replace the car.

Planned obsolescence.

 

Yeah I have seen my fair share of that. I can't stand to hear strange noises coming from the car. I hope that I dodged a bullet with it. Tomorrow I will know for sure.

 

All is well. Whew. I was worried but after changing out the fluid it's much better.
