do i have 4.10's? maybe that would explain terrible gas milage

Ok well i have a 2002 ford ranger 4x4 xlt with the 4.0l sohc and i always thought it had 3.73's. Well today i looked for the axle code on the rear differncial and found the following:
v330b
4 10 88 1h06

im guess the 4 10 means the gears and the 88 means the axle. I get about 12 to 14 in city. What gears would help me more? I am running stock rims on michelin ltx "all terrain" tires lol

The short gears would probably be helping you in the city, at speeds below whining it out in high gear. Just curious what size are your tires?

I get 12-14 also. I thought there was something wrong with the truck, but I've done everything I can think of that would have an effect on mpg. I've just learned to accept it. Sucks but, It is what it is.

I can't believe all these newer models get worse mileage than my 95. I average 20 mpg combined.

maybe some of you guys are trying too hard to get 16+ and in turn are not able to get there since you're second guessing everything. just drive. i'm averaging in the winter 16, i can't wait til it warms up.

i rev it somewhat quick off the line and shift around 3k. getting through the gear asap. i know the auto's can't do that as much but maybe learning where your truck shifts and go from there. if you shift at lets say 42, do 45. it's only 3 mph over and you are in a higher gear using less fuel then you would being at 40 and reving higher.
