Driveshaft balancer

Hi:

'99 B2500, 2wd, manual shift, 1-piece driveshaft. A year or so ago, the balancer collar at the front of the driveshaft came loose (which I understand is pretty common) and after a lot of clunking from the loosely spinning collar, I just took it off. I was told I'd have a lot of high-speed vibration from doing this, and there was, but it was pretty tolerable and I just decided to live with it. Recently, however, the vibration has gotten more pronounced at high speeds, and at very low speeds (i.e., under 10 mph), the truck has a noticeable side-to-side wobble, which seems to move in time with the rotation of the driveshaft, and now there's also a fair amount of squeaking from under the bed. My question is, is it possible to get this driveshaft (minus the stock balancer that came loose), balanced? If not, should I try to find a used driveshaft with the balancer intact, or is it possible to pick up a new driveshaft somewhere? I'm discovering that driveshafts aren't exactly easy parts to find...

The driveshaft can be balanced without the "dampener" installed

this "dampener" is for driveshaft noise and such, not really balancing. It sounds like you have a frozen or bad u-joint. remove the driveshaft and make sure both u joints move in both directions easily. You wont feel driveshaft vibration at 10 MPH unless it is shaped like a jumprope
