What rear end gear ratios are available/optional for a 2011 xlt ranger 4x4 with a 4.0L engine, and manual trans? I'm seeing contradictions in data.

 

3.73 and 4.10s is all i've heard of coming stock on the rangers...

what contradicting data are you seeing?

i've seen 3.55, and even 3.27 mentioned at various websites, but when talking to a ford salesman the 2 you mentioned are all that's available.

 

for a 4x4 its just 3.73 or 4.10. You have other options when its 2wd.

 

ok, then it would seem that 2 options exist from ford. any reason a custom set of gears couldn't be substituted; say 3.55 range?? and i 'm assuming that both front and rear would need to swapped?

 

yes both front and rear would need to be swapped. Dont know why you would want to go lower than 3.73 with a SOHC though.

 

i don't want to go lower; i want to go higher for better gas mileage. 4.0L rangers aren't noted for spectacular fuel economy. i have a 2.3L ranger stick, and get 30+ mpg when i drive reasonably, but it lacks power for pulling my boat((only travel 5 miles max, but up and down). there are some great ford "programs" in my area on 2011 rangers; i can get 1 for about 1/2 what a f150 will cost. i would seldomly need low end pulling power(not an off-roader), and when/if i do, a 4x4 has low range. this isn't a case of 1 vehicle fits all situations, but i'd like to get as close as possible. don't need 5 vehicles around to fill all the needs.

 

Thats my fault, I wasnt thinking when I wrote that. I dont think going to a 3.55 is gonna do what you want it to do. the SOHC motors are rpm motors. The best millage I get usually is right around 2300 rpm. On the highway with 3.73s i was getting about 22mpg. Just thinking out loud here as I have never had 3.55s though.
