Driving in low gear (1 or 2)
I'm just wondering if it
Is it ok to use 4x4 high or low while the truck is in a lower gear, say 1 or 2? I have never done it, but I'm wondering why there is 1 and 2 if there is 4x4? |
All auto's have 1&2 some even have a 3. It aint gona hurt nuttin by using 1,2,3 or d
|
Yes its ok, it will keep you from upshifting if the rpms get up higher, and allow for engine braking on descends
|
there is a 1st and 2nd gear option to lower the effictive gear ratio out of the transmission. It is perfectly fine to run in either of those gears as long as you arent revving it out like on a road forever. Offroad i am in 1st or 2nd all the time and am constantly in and out of 4wd lo
|
Just remember that if you shift into 2nd it will stay in second even if you stop. This helps if you are on a very slippery surface.
|
so... In deep snow it would be better to use 4H and be in second to get the power
Sounds good Thanks |
Something else to consider, is to not drop it into 1 or 2 when moving at much speed. 20mph to manual 1 isn't very nice to the trans
|
If my truck was an auto I would only shift into a lower gear if I was going up or coming down something or if I was deep mud or snow. The rest on the time I would let it do it's thing.
|
i do it. im not 4wd but when im offroad like limiting shifting. less chances for the auto transmission to do something stupid. I dont reall trust mine, haha.

As far as the OP I have a manual 2wd but I frequently leave it in 2nd and have the foot completely off the throttle to keep it under 30mph on steep descents and to keep it in the power band going up the same hill at 25-30. |
its so you can lock it into a gear like everyone's saying..
its nice for crawling and stuff like that because it wont shift on you in the middle of a climb or something when you're not expecting it and lead to a bad ending.. |
wheeling, I always have mine in either 1 or 2 while in 4 low or 4 high, the only time I'll manual shift my trans.
|
its 2wd or low for me.. none of that 4hi junk :scool:
