Dumping the 3 speed in search of highway gearing

So... I used to have an 89 Ranger 4cyl 5 speed 2wd... Until my friend t-boned it with his Taurus... So finally I got a new Ranger, a very clean 84 4cyl auto, but I cant stand the 3 speed automatic in it... I drive on the highway a bit and the auto has beat mpg's and the power isn't where you need it most of the time. My question to all of you is: If I change the flywheel over and put the pedals in etc. etc. will the 89 trans bolt up to the 84 2.3?? If not, I may just put the rear from my 89 in the 84 and call it a day with what I think is a lower gear ratio, to maybe help out the 3 speed's highway cruising capability... Any responses are greatly appreciated. In return.. lots of high-res pictures of everything hahah
