4r55e auto trans ?

I have a 05 Edge with the 3.0/5R44E trans. My problem is that when I put the truck in reverse it kinda takes it's time to engage. It feels like it slips in to gear. All forward gears work perfectly.
I know it needs a fluid and filter change so that's this weekends project.
I was just wondering if anyone else has had this prob? And what was the cure?I'm hoping it's just old fluid but not counting on it.
Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony

My truck started doing that about a week ago and now the forward gears are going out too. Looks like I'm in the market for a new transmission. Hope you aren't too.

I sure hope the trans. is not on the way out.I've been doing some research and this might be the problem.

I'm determined to figure this out and report my findings back here.
Any tips are still welcome.

Just so you know, yours is a 5R44E, not a 4R55E

Nobody else on here has had this same issue? It seems to be a common problem for the 4R44E,4R55E,5R44E and 5R55E.
Anybody ever deal with the valve body gasket blowout?
I'm gonna dig in today I was just hoping someone might have dealt with this before.

you can adjust the reverse band and check the separator plate gasket. If the separator plate gasket was not blown (replace ti anyway) and the band was not out of adjustment too bad, you could have a sticking reverse modulator valve in the valve body

depending on how comfortable you are with this transmission, i can walk you through attempting to repair it...you will need an in'lb and or ft/lb torque wrench and some patience and finesse

Correct. the 97 4.0L has the 5R55E. The manual "2" on your gear selector is actually 3rd gear in the 5-speed sequence.

2nd gear in the 5R is not manually selectable. It is used only during heavy acceleration and is skipped for all other situations. So, basically, when you're not doing a WOT zoomie, your transmission is a 4-speed.

I just turned 100k on mine. '02 2wd 3.0.
I guess you could say its a little sluggish getting into gear, only like a second though.
My biggest beef with the tranny is that it feels like it doesn't want to lock up in a hurry. It will shift through all the gears smoothly but then I'll wait forever for that final drop in rpm's when it locks up.
