Welcome to the forum

Not the switch, most likely the Shift Motor on the transfer case or the 4x4 module is the problem
Tap on the shift motor with piece of wood or carefully with a hammer
Then try to shift to 2WD

The electric motor's brushes stick, tapping can loosen them up
Motor needs to be rebuilt if this happens.

If the motor is the problem then 4WD lights should flash when you try to select 2WD
If no flashing lights then could be a blown fuse or bad 4X4 module
For 2001 Ranger
Check fuse #13, 20amp, in ENGINE Fuse box
Check fuse #5, 15amp, in CAB fuse box

2001 to 2005 Rangers use the same 4x4CM, also 2001-2002 Explorers and sport trac
4x4CM is 4WD Control Module, these were known to fail, wouldn't call it common but a "known" problem for sure
These can be found at wrecking yards
Dorman makes replacement, part number 599-252

Fords last revision part number is 1L54-7H417-AE
The AE ending can be A plus any other letter and work, i.e. AA, AB, AC, ect.....AE is just the last revision before different part number was used for 2006 Rangers

4x4CM is located behind passenger side kick panel in 2001-2003 Rangers

You can remove the shift motor and manually rotate the shift rod in the transfer case back to 2WD to get you out of a jam

Look here, at this rebuild thread to see shift points on transfer case:
Picture 4 shows shift rod pointed at 2WD
Shift rod doesn't rotate 360deg, so from 4low you turn it Clockwise back to 2WD
