Welcome to the forum
I assume the Explorer also has the 4.0l SOHC V6(VIN E), not the V8
Then yes, straight swap............for the most part, you may need to change oil pans to fit 4x4, and may want to change upper intake and perhaps lower as well.
Sensor layout and wiring would be the reason for that.
And '04 was at the tail end of the "bad timing chain" issues with the 4.0l SOHC engines
1997 to 2003/4 had that issue.
You for sure want to replace thermostat housing, they crack and leak, rear main seal, just because engine is out, and Knock sensor

Hello! I am new to the forum. Thank you for accepting my membership. I, too, have an engine question very similar to above. I have a 2002 4.0 SOHC V6 (Vin E) It is manual transmission. I need to find an engine for it. I can't seem to find a compatibility chart online. I found an engine fairly near me that is from a 2000 Explorer, 129K miles. I'm told I would need to switch the intake manifolds. It's from a private seller and I don't now if it's compatible. Also wondering if I'm better off finding one from a shop to be safe, but this one is so affordable. Are there tricks to know if it's good? It's not in a vehicle right now. Sure would appreciate any advice.
