Engine Swap Tech Info

My first thread on this forum. Thanks for letting me join. Have an automatic, 3.0 2001 Ranger XLT 4X2 with long cab, and am considering a 5.0 swap. Is there a year or span of years concerning engine/driveline that I need to look for in order to accomplish this with the least amount of drama? Thank you in advance of any and all responses.

Welcome to the forum

2001 is still analog dash but does have PATS(passive anti-theft system) so uses "transponder keys", so one thing you will need to deal with, but not a big thing

1996 to 2001 Explorer V8's are the best engine/trans swaps, 2WD version would be best

The Ford 302/5.0l OHV was only 19" wide in any year so fits between the heater/AC box and steering shaft in Ranger engine bay
But the Explorer model also has the "short nose" accessories and the low profile upper intake needed to fit lengthwise and height-wise as well

You need the V8 engine and 4R70W automatic trans, and the V8 engine computer with its wiring harness

Most people buy a whole V8 Explorer with bad body or high miles, as there are quite a few "extra" parts like exhaust and mounts and ..............

Good read here on the process: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...8-2011-ranger/
