Explorer LS in my Ranger Axle?

Well i have the option to buy an Explorer Limited Slip for a GREAT price. My understanding is that the explorer is a 31 spline and my ranger is a 28 spline....

Can i swap components from the Explorer Limited Slip to my Ranger Axle? I also want to keep my 4.10 ratio gear on my truck right now so would i be able to swap the LS guts on to my ranger diff?

Is this possible without having to buy an eplorer axle or FX4 axle?

Let me know my options, thanks

I believe when you rebuild one of those Trac-Loc's, you end up taking all the inners out of it. And pulling out the side gears. Those side gears are what determine what spline count that limited slip is for. I think you can put in 28spline side gears when you get done rebuilding the unit. Now...I have no clue if the LS side gears are different than Open sidegears, but its worth a try.

Trac-Lock rebuild kits are pretty cheap. I just looked 'em up the other day and they are about $60-70 from Summit.

I'd run the Explorer carrier but run 28spline side gears. I dont think you can put in limited slip components in an open carrier. Use your existing 4.10 ring gear, but bolt it to the new carrier.

I hope it is damn near free. It sounds like a lot of work just to end up with a trac loc
You'll have to use the carrier it comes in. I have no idea if you can swap side gears or not in there.
Just keep in mind, you'll be buying the limited slip, rebuild kit, rebuilding the L/S, then you'll have to have someone set it up again with a different carrier (I believe).
If it were me, I would rather just throw a lock-rite or something in there and call it a day.

X2 IMO its not worth the effort for the trac-loc. although for a stock unit it worked ok, but mine didnt last long. i replaced it with an auburn gear unit. like stated above, just thow a lock-rite in your stock carrier, no gears or backlash to set up and you can be done in an hour or 2.

I'm sorry...but i've got an aussie in mine. Same thing but different as a Lock-rite/right. It's somewhat violent in parking lots with a manual trans. Maybe that's not what the OP is after...

He's getting a score of a deal on it. Even after rebuild, he'll be at about a Benjamen for it. Generally, OEM carriers in an OEM housing dont need any additional shimming. Doing a carrier swap from a shop should only run him about $50-75. New Trac-Loc's are about $250-270. Judge it out Chris, figure out of the juice is worth the squeeze.

is anyone 100% that the expo carrier is the same as the ranger? the bore that the side gears slide into may be larger to accomodate the 31 spline axles. may want to cross reference part #'s before you buy it. also there is no garauntee that you wont have to shim a stock carrier, it doesnt take much more than a couple thousandths of an inch to throw off the backlash. all im saying is i would hate for you to buy it and have it not work, or cost more than you expected.

Yeah I forget that the auto-lockers are a little harsh with manual transmissions. Mine was super nice with an auto. I didn't mine my roommates detroit in his Jeep (manual), or the lock-rite after his detroit blew up. It is definitely a little more clunky though accelerating through turns.
