Explorer rear SOA preperation.

This is as much a show and tell thread as it is a technical thread.

I finally got around to cutting and grinding everything off the Explorer axle I had, to be able to make it a spring over axle setup in conjunction with my Super Lift.

Heres a question though for you guys. Does any of the site vendors sell leaf spring perches? I was going to buy some from Summit, but they decided they'd rather lose a $300 dollar sale becuase I put the wrong billing address in and wouldn't simply verify the correct one with me.

Any how, here's 3 shots from todays work. I ground the stock leaf spring perches off, then cleaned both tubes down to bare metal, and then primed them today. I'll be painting them black tomarrow. I didn't grind the pumpkin down, too many odd surfaces and shapes that the grinder couldn't have gotten into.

I used Rustoleum really rusty primer for the axle, and will be using the exterior metal paint as well. Stuff is awesome and apply's very easily. Each quart can cost about $8 at Lowes.

One tube cleaned.

sweet

ScottG Feb 20, 2007 10:59 AM

to my knowledge, no one here sells the perchs

Im too lazy/cheap with mine, im looking to run a flipkit

lifted97ranger Feb 20, 2007 11:13 AM

looks good.....why not just replace the order with Summit?

D94R Feb 20, 2007 11:34 AM

I'll end up having to order them through summit I think anyhow, I found other places to purchase the shocks from (cheaper than Summit too). If I can't find any perches on Ebay I'll have to go back with Summit.

Oh, and the whole "free shipping" through Summit is a total Lie. Yes they dont charge you shipping, BUT they charge you a $10 handling fee. Whereas the other places I buy from charge ~9 shipping AND handling fee. SO SUMMIT where am I saving money with you guys?

lifted97ranger Feb 20, 2007 11:37 AM

because if you price things from other places, like for example, www.ntwonline.com , they charge you by weight for shipping........i priced the new DC-1 Black's from both, Summit wanted $10.95 for shipping and NTW wanted $40 for shipping.....hmmmmmm

Summit will price match ANYONE, as long as they can look it up on the net and prove the price you tell them....

D94R Feb 20, 2007 11:43 AM

How gay, I get on ebay to look for perches, and there is Summit Racing selling the same ones on their site, looks like I won't have to go through the hassle of changing all that information from them, I'll just use Paypal :)

Guess I didn't think of that, but for the shocks and perches I was going to buy, Styling Concepts was actually cheaper after all said and done. Then I checked ebay, and found the same Bilstein 5100's for cheaper still.

zabeard Feb 20, 2007 11:45 AM

summit ships to me in record time for just normally shipping of 10.95. i always know shipping will be that much.

i ordered my shocks yesterday and they will be delivered today. now that is what i like.

D94R Feb 20, 2007 11:49 AM

Awesome, I just bought the spring perches a minute ago so hopefully they will ship out today. No clue how long they'll take to get to Utucky though...

Bilstein 5100's are coming from a place in CA, hopefully they'll be here in a couple days too. I still need to purchase the front SL shocks.

zabeard Feb 20, 2007 11:52 AM

Summit has a distribution place in Nevada, might be there before you know it.

x2

When I lived in utah, I had one part for my dirtbike trailer (from summit) that was there the next day.

Actually, I ordered at 2am and it got there at about 3pm...talk about nice!!!

D94R Feb 20, 2007 09:06 PM

well shoot, I didn't know that, that would be awesome to get them soon... though I need to get an outlet setup for my welder and a few misc. other things before I could even weld them on.

I applied two coats of Enamel satin black to the axle today, got tired of painting and decided to go with just one thick ass coat on the SuperLift brackets. I'll get pics tomarrow.

Oh and I realize I'll have to regrind part of the tubes to be able to weld the perches on, Ive just been killing time lately waiting for warm weather to finally stay here.

Pics of painted rear end and painted SL brackets.

sweeet

D94R Mar 2, 2007 07:03 AM

I read that Scott, oh and BTW, dont worry bout sending the LS unit, I found one out of the JY for cheap.

Now I just need to get my butt in gear and get all the stuff set up for my welder so I can weld the perches on.

jrpro130 Mar 2, 2007 10:11 AM

Just looking, but aren't those spring perches at the wrong angle? I don't know if they are welded on yet b/c you said in your last post "so I can weld the perches on"

lifted97ranger Mar 2, 2007 10:15 AM

looks good Matt......definately going to look good with the Superlift installed!

those are mounts for a sway bar

lifted97ranger Mar 2, 2007 12:54 PM

^^that is what i thought....

D94R Mar 2, 2007 01:35 PM

Thanks for the compliment Maurice. I'm waiting on a warm 4 day weekend to install the lift, and to figure out a front drive shaft. I may just bight the bullet and buy the SuperLift shaft instead of trying to make the JY one work. I PM'd Doc to see what he had done to his stock shaft when he had his ranger, but I never got a reply from him.

Yah those are the perches for the explorer sway bar, which are in a slightly different place than the Ranger's. So I'll have to get creative with sway bar end links if I want to use the Explorers sway bar or not.

Big04Ranger Mar 2, 2007 01:41 PM

i say run your stocker till its junk.. it will last anywhere from 5k-20k miles iv heard

lifted97ranger Mar 2, 2007 01:42 PM

:stupid:

Kanoeking Mar 2, 2007 02:20 PM

my stocker lasted me almost 35000 though only 25000 after i did the "PV Hub Fix".... worst yet was that the d-shaft and one of the PVH blew at the same time, creating a problem... solution... well that was to just buy a $87 JY shaft from an exploder(no particular reason... just what was available) and AVM hubs.... Id rather have to fork out $87 every 20000 miles than bite the bullet and buy the SL shaft.
