finding an r7 axle / rear end

You guys are getting sick of my threads by now, right? I'm sorry... just have so many questions I can't find good answers for when I search.

I'm going axle shopping today. How do I tell if a Ranger is a 'level ll?" Do they say? What years have the 31 spline?

There is a mazda with an r7 axle code... any mazdas come with 31 spline? Its got stock 16" wheels on it, I don't know much else about it.

Just wondering how I can tell a 28 spline r7 vs a 31 spline one. Thanks.

mazdas didnt come with 31 spline just level IIs and explorers (disc brakes)

the wheels dont mean anything with the axles..my stock ranger had 16s and 28 spline 8.8

the truck should say lvl II on it..if not just check the tag on the diff or look at the truck, twin sticks, black carpet...or other parts of the lvl II package..i havent looked for lvl II axles before but i think they are kinda hard to come by..I THINK

r7 just tells you it's a 8.8" 4.10 LS axle...no spine counts. You gotta take a tape measure to the axle housing to confirm.

Yeah they are VERY hard to come by. How many L2's do you see driving around? Add that to how many have wrecked. yeahhhh. lol.

You can tell visually too....take a look towards the right of the picture where the brake flange is on the housing....

31spline (note the 'dip down' because both wheel bearings are the same size)

well if your going axle shoppin the expo rears are not that hard to find. just make sure you get matching gears and you will have to change the sping pearch location.

No gears to match he has a 2wd. Almost seems a shame to put that axle in a 2wd.

DSMissed, you may want to look at just finding a regular 8.8 27 spline ranger axle and making some upgrades. I call LKQ and the closest R7 axle they had was in Iowa and would cost $1000 delivered. I told them no thanks.

I have the axle code link bookmarked, thank you.

HarryTasker... come on now. First of, I'm a girl, I don't know too many other "Kerri's" that are boys :) Secondly... a shame? Are you kidding? Whats the shame in wanting to help my 2wd one-wheel-wonder get around in the snow a little better???

I can have any Ranger axle I want at the junkyard here for $200. I know there are 2 that were R7's, the mazda being one of them, and I just didn't know what would determine them to be 28 or 31 spline, and figured if one of them happened to be 31 I would opt to get it. I believe the other r7 was in an fx4.

Anyways.. I appreciate the help!!!

Hey Kerri. If you want, you can always take pictures of the donor truck(exterior and interior), post them here, and we can determine what it came with off the showroom floor. I'm talking about the questionable fx4 at the yard. If both end up being 28's, choose the one with the least number of miles.

A real dead giveaway is if the truck has yellow and blue shocks(bilsteins) front and rear, it's likely to have that 31spline under it. Or if the differential cover has TWO tags on it instead of one. A point that I had forgotten all about.

Ok, thanks alot, you've helped a bunch. I know for sure it didn't have blistein shocks, thats something that would have caught my eye for sure. I'll try and look at things a little closer though to make sure.
