front axel seal problem

front axel seal problem
I have a 2004 XLT Ranger 4wd.
So, 5 months ago I replaced the passenger CV axle (boot torn), and pulled out the whole differential to change fluids, replaced seals (pinion, rt and left seals), changed the differential fluid and re-sealed. All good and drove 5 months with no leaks or problems.
The other day I noticed lots of leaking oil at the passenger (rt) axle seal. The seal is loose and popped out of it's seat! The differential fluid is only about 1/2 inch down so I suspect it happened in the last week while my mom has been borrowing it to haul some stuff.
Reading the forum, seems like two possibilites: Autozone sold me the wrong sized seal or there was dirt when we put it in so it eventually worked its way out, or the breather tube somehow got blocked. Not sure how the later would have happened and if so if something major needs to be done to fix the problem.
Is there other causes I should be thinking about? I found two different shops willing to do the job for ~$130, and I'm busy at work so this is a tempting option to pulling the whole wheel and CV out some weekend. I just want to know ahead if there is something more expensive I should be prepared for. One of the shops also thought it could be an "inner" seal?? Not sure that this even exisits!
Thanks!

And here is a picture of the culprit, note that the seal (red) is completely visible and out of its housing. Should there even be that big of a gap between the CV and the differential arm? It seems like the CV arm is separating from the differential housing perhaps? Why?
