05 Ranger Auto Transmission - Will not drive/ only in 2 and 1.

Hey Everyone,

I have a 2005 Ford Ranger XLT Supercab 4x4 Automatic Transmission.

I have currently 107,000 Miles on it.

Yesterday I was driving on the highway, and I went to pass a car. As I pressed the gas to the floor, the RPM's went to 7,000 RPMs but I did not accelerate at all. The truck would maintain highway speed for a bit longer.

I then got off at the exit (that was right there) and I stopped at the red light. I waited to make my turn, and when I went to accelerate, the truck did not move (in Drive). I then dropped the truck into 2, and the truck drove.

I then pulled into a parking lot, shut the truck off started it again, and the truck would not got anywhere in D or R. But the truck will still move in 2 or 1.

There was no clunking/grinding or anything.
I checked the transmission fluid. It is full, and appears clean. Last transmission service was at 59,000 Miles. It was a fluid flush and filter change.

I recently had new tires put on the truck (265/70/16) and I noticed it seemed to take a bit more gas to make the truck move. The RPM's were more around 3,000 RPM to accelerate. I'm not sure if this is related or not.

I towed the truck home to avoid any further damage to the transmission or truck.

I am curious on everyones thoughts on what it maybe, before I just bring it to the dealership or like AAMCO. I like to research a bit before going in blind.

I did try and put the truck in 4x4 High. Thinking maybe it would move in Drive. It did not, truck did not move in O/D off either. When I did this the O/D off light was blinking at me (meaning there should be a tranny code stored now right?).

I have a quote from the Ford Dealership for a transmission replacement of $3,200. What is everyones thoughts? It is my work truck, and I am considering if necessary to change the tranny, but if I don't have to I will not either.

Please let me know, Thanks in advance!

Truck does not move forward in D.
Truck Moves foward normal in Manual 1
Truck Moves foward normal in Manual 2
If in Manual 2, and you downshift to Manual 1 there is engine braking occuring. The truck slows down great.

Truck does not move really in reverese.

If O/D is turned OFF. Truck will slowly (feeling very underpowered) move foward in D
if O/D is turned OFF. Truck will slowly (feeling very underpowered) move back in Reverse.

Truck engages each gear it seams as you select it.

Please guys, any ideas? Someone else has to have had these issues.

I'm bringing the truck to another tranny shop tomorrow at 8am. I'm trying to have an idea before just hearing "it needs a new transmission..." I can't seem to find any really respectable shops around here. I just don't want to get taken for something small.

Update: Shop said internal damage, needs a new transmission.

Truck now has no Manual 1, manual 2, Drive, O/D, or Reverse. I guess it's time to push it off a clif and buy a truck made with chopsticks?

How much is everyone else paying for a new transmission to be installed?

Your probably looking at upwards of $2,000 depending on the shop.
