I am looking to add another tranny cooler to my truck as I tow a 3500lb-4000lb boat in the summer. I know what it is rated to pull but this will give me a little more peace of mind. I have done some searching and found that the ones with the stacked plates are supposed to be more efficient. My question is: Will the cooler in the link below work on my ranger? I'd suggest actually measuring your tranny fluid first. This can be done through the OBD2 port or with a physical guage.

If you do go this route, and since your in the north.. you might want to consider a cooler with a t-stat in it. This will by-pass the cooler until the fluid reaches an excessive temp and the extra capacity is needed. It'll make winter driving/operation nicer by not over cooling.

Sounds like a good Idea. I just got a tranny temp gauge today from summit. I will not be towing the boat again until spring so I will wait and see what the temp is when the time comes to tow it again and decide from there. Thanks a million for the info.

 

The ones on the Rangers stock are not very good I would just replace it with a really good one. I dont know if that one will work that you posted.

 

The bone yards are full of them.
Clean it out real good and bolt it in.
I have done this many times.
You do not want to block coolant flow with a thermostat.
The return fluid is used for lubrication and if it is blocked with a thermostat the bearings could run dry.
A better method is to run the coolers in series/parallel.

 

OK sounds good. I got my tranny temp gauge installed. I'm running at about 145-155 degrees. Is this about normal? Outside temp was about 40 degrees. Oh, and the sensor is in the test port on the side of the tranny.

 

Best sensor position is in the outlet from trans to radiator. Anything under about 195 deg. is ok. Around 220, Mercon starts to break down. MerconV is semi-synthetic, and holds up to around 240.

The OEM cooler is a plate style, which is pretty good actually (better than the tube/fin type). Just add a second cooler in series with the first, and an inline filter (summit racing, $30, or magnafine from bulkpart.com, $20).

Do not tow in overdrive. The OD can not handle the torque, regardless of temperature.

Thats the same type of cooler we install at work. They work really fine, the best way to mount his on the return line of the oem cooler. By carefull with filter on the line. The filter will cause a restriction on the line when its going to get dirty.
