Front diff leaks

hey

my front diff is leaking oil from where the front driveshaft enters... what could this be?

I also noticed theres sometime some light banging sounds when I steer right at 40+ mph.. any idea where it might come from?

btw I drive a 2002 XLT 4x4 with the 4.0L

thanks

Its the front pinion seal. Mine was leaking when I bought my truck. Its not real hard to do. Hardest part is prying the old one out.

Mine front diff was leaking like that a few time. Its the Pinion seal.

I was eating them up for a while. My friend is a ford tech and he replaced two for me. He said i was getting a lot of sand in there and it was like sand paper on the back of the seal.

I don't think it will hurt anything as long as you keep fluid in it.

how hard is it to replace? and cost wise?

RockysFord 10-09-2006 04:27 PM

cheap..like 20$ i think..my biggest pain was finding something to put it back in even, since i dont have a bearing driver here....
