Front Driveshaft - Removal and install Q's

So I removed my front driveshaft inorder to swap out my clutch. This was the first time working with a cv style connection on a drive shaft and I think it came apart incorrectly. I undid the 6, 12 pt 8mm bolts which holds the assembly together as well as it to the tc flange. (I am assuming) I tapped on the side of the assembly with a hammer and pulled on the shaft and the metal cap came off and the inner race and bearings fell out, I am assuming that metal cap is supposed to stay on the outer housing and that the outer housing is supposed to seperate from the flange on the transfer case?

Sorry, I don't know the correct terms for the different components.
