slave cylinder... what the heck?

I have an '03 Ranger XLT with the 3.0 and 2wd... The clutch went to the floor last week, checked the fluid and it was real low. I topped it off and it pumped up fine... I knew this wouldn't be the end of it... just hoped to make it to the weekend so I would have time to look at it.

I crawled under this morning, but didn't see the slave right away. We had to go out, and of course it started acting up again. I just crawled out from under it and it seems the slave is cocentric with the input shaft?! Tell me I'm seeing things... some idiot engineer built the slave around the shaft, so the whole damn tranny has to come out to replace it?

Please, someone tell me I'm wrong...

Thanks

Thank Mazda for that one, then Ford for allowing it :P I changed mine when the truck had 40k on it, but ~3 years of usage.

Yeah the slave cylinder is a major b!tch on our trucks. I roasted one 700 miles from home last year.

How do you know when the slave cyl is going bad? And can you get it in gear if it goes bad?

Usually that's the main symptom- getting it into gear, also a light clutch pedal that seems to take little effort to press down, and loss of clutch fluid

I don't have any issues with my slave, but I am going to be changing it just to be sure.

I have around 80K miles on mine now.
