Impressed w/ the manual transmission and 4wd Low..

We got the first measureable snow fall here last night (2/11/2008)....we got about 4" by 9pm, so i decided to get the truck out and lube all the 4wd componets....so me and the fiance headed out down some country roads, remember that NO plows had been out, nor will they be out....we get to this hill called "Nine Penny Hill"....it has an elevation change from top to bottom of about 200' at about a 30* incline...it is windy and has steep hills off one side.....

i wanted to try the 4wd Low and the new(er) manual transmission....so i stop at the top of the hill, lock the lockouts in, and put her in 4 low....i didn't even have to give it gas to let the clutch out (1st impress of the maneuver)....once the truck was moving down the hill, I was SOOOO impressed with the low end torque that was being put to the ground that i was beside myself...the automatic NEVER felt this good, even if i shifted the auto into 1st gear.....

so when i made my way back to Nine Penny Hill, i started up it in 2wd....i went about 50' of pretty good going (remember, I have BFG A/T's), but i wanted to have a little fun with it....so i flipped her in 4wd High going about 15mph up the hill....that didn't do anything for me, so i wanted a little more adventure....so i stopped (thinking ah crap i bet i slide backwards while stopped here), put it in 4wd Low and took off......boy to hear that engine whine and work was brilliant....i went up the hill like it was dry.....by the top i was in 4th gear going about 30mph and the engine wound up to about 3,000 rpm's...... i was in love.....

he he he, just wanted to share my experience......i got a couple stopped snowing pictures, i will post them when i get home.....we are susposed to get some more snow/ice tonight, so more fun for me!

yeah I love 4 low with my 5 speed. next time your playing with the 4lo just let the clutch out and just keep shifting through the gears but don't use gas. When I'm in 4 low I'm at about 30 in 5th at 3,000RPMS. Must be the gearing of your 4.0L compred to my 3.0L engine.

At the offroad expo last year i got to test drive a auto FJ offroad. It was cool but I kept going fast because I'm not used to offroading an auto truck. Coming downhill sucked it it because you barely get any help slowing down from the engine.

You should try a 4.1 tcase with 4.46 1st gear and 4.10s in the diff....and I'm going to 4.88s soon! It will almost stall without gas in 1st!

^^^^Mo's first post....hence the reason i'm all about manual transmissions....i hate slushboxes aka scattermatics.

I really wish we could get kits for the 1354 case....I sure could use that 4:1 crawl ratio.

They do make the Atlas that fits the Ranger without any modifications but it expensive.

well how about this, everyone here puts in about say $5 dollars and give it to me and I'll let you all know how well it works when I put it on my truck. Sound good? Ok its settled then.

I miss 5spd in 4low, my automatics won't do what it did, I only had 3.27 gears but 4low was awesome, never having to get on the gas to get outta a rough spot......I been wanting an auto but not that I have it, I been seriously thinking of swapping a 5spd into my truck someday so I can crawl in 4low again. (automatic in 4low just don't do it going up hill)

I have used 4 low......just with the automatic that used to be in my truck......the truck that I wheel has a lower gear ratios in the automatic and the t-case ('78 Bronco w/ a NP205 and a C6)
