Front Gears same as Rear Gears / HUM??
 

So I just put 4.10's in my rear (8.8) and I had ordered my Richmond Gears from Summit. I thought that the front and rear were the same ring and pinion set. But apparently, they aren't. I was also going to replace my bearings and seals and the like. I know that the gear sets are not the same for the front and rear because the bearings don't fit.

BTW, I'm not talking about different ratio's (3.73 vs 4.10), I'm talking about the actual size of the ring and pinion

Do you guys know if they are the same ring and pinion set? and I'm just on crack

How many shims did you guys have to put on your rear pinion? Any suggestions for when I do the front?? I first put (on my rear gears) 2...not enough....then put 3......still not enough.......then put 5 (becuase of the wear pattern, it needed A LOT more), ........crap...too much it doesn't spin. So I now have 4 on there now, with a little hum.

Does the hum ever go away??

the front is a completely different axle. its a D35 Hybrid axle. assuming you have a 98+ Ranger

as for the shims you should always put the same spacers and shims on the new gears as your old gears had on them. then see where you are at and what to try next.

The original pinion had a built in shim, therefore It didn't have any. So thats why I had to keep prying off the stupid bearing (such a pain).

ITs a 2000 Ranger, 4.0L

front and rear gears are completely different.....you need to tell whoever you order the front gears from what truck you have and they should be able to get you the right set for the front...

So about the front..........did you guys have to put any shims on (How many), or what was the deal????

What about the hum?? I heard it will go away, but I don't see how it could go away.

what you need to do is put in as many shims as you can on one side of the diff (as many as you can with the diff still spinning freely) and then split that in half. thats where you start out on shims and then start to add or take away depending on how the gears mesh.

built in shim? never heard of that. are you sure a shim was just not needed?

The hum indicates an out of tolerance mesh pattern. It won't go away unless you correct the pattern on the gears. If you've put more than 100 miles on your gearset then you'll be stuck with the hum forever, unless you buy new gears and set up the new set correctly. Its just an indicator of an out of tolerance setup, you could have just gotten a less than true ring gear which will hum as well even if setup perfectly. Either way the noise isn't going away.


As for the pinion not having enough shims.....are you sure you have the pinion preload within its tolerance range, and are you sure the carrier has the proper amount of shims for backlash and the proper carrier bearing preload? If those settings are out of spec its going to throw off your pinion depth.

should have had a professional do the install if you dont know how. gears is not somthing just anybody that can turn a wrench can do

My buddy and I put the gears in. He has done a ton of 4.10 gears. The tread pattern is almost exact. Thats why I think the hum is still there, its not super perfect.
