servo stumped

I have an 88 ford ranger, bought as a basket case to lift up, and revive. It had some electrical issues when purchased, along with several needs due to general neglect finally got everything replaced, all new wiring, new floor pans, ready to roll with the exception of the intermidiate and overdrive servos on the tranny were leaking perfusely. Simple problem one would think, depress servos, remove snap ring, pull servo, remove o ring clean and replace. Well I did just that, when reassembled, I no longer had 1st or reverse which are on the same band. Fluid is full and no longer leaks from servos, springs were kept separate, could not have been switched around. Only cause I can think of is previous owners had a love obsession with RTV. There was a small amount around servos on the outside as the previous owners attempt to slow or fix leak. I cleaned around servos very well in dis-and reassembly, but possibly some rtv could be blocking the passageway, causing my 1st and reverse failure both worked fine prior to changing seals, all I did was change seals. Just want to see if my rtv idea is confirmed with you guys, or if someone thinks it could be something else, I'm in uncharted territory here, not a tranny guy... help me out if you can.
