installing a transfer case on 2wd

i just got to thinking, if you have a 4wd. you have the option of 4 high, and 4 low, and 2 high. you install manual hubs, you then have 2 low if you dont lock the hubs, correct? so if you installed a transfer case on a 2wd truck, then you would have the option of 2 low....right? and if you have 2 low, you get more torque, which means you can pull someone out better/ easier?

my cousin slid in a ditch, and all we did was spin trying to pull it out. damn heavy chevy 1500. we had to call out a tundra to pull him out. and i was thinkin, man if i just had some more oomph...

feel free to call me an idiot, but hopefully someone answers the question. im all hopped up on Redline.

locking in the hubs with the transfer case in 2wd will do NOTHING extra for your truck. The only way it will do anything is to put the truck in 4lo without the front engaged. That would be 2lo.

You could do this, but you will have to install a 4wd transmission or modify yours into a 4wd transmission.

I don't think a divorced transfer case will fit on a ranger

Yea, not worth the time. Plus you can barley pull $hit out in 2WD.

well im hoping to eventually have a front axle, but that will be awhile before it happens. installing the tranny and tcase now just takes the pain out of doing it later

2lo would do nothing for you. You need more traction, your just spinning your tires and 2lo will just make that happen more. You'd need 4x4 to pull him out.

Sorry but this is wrong, 2lo will help alot. Hes spinning his tires cause he has to use alot of throttle, 2lo allows him to use less throttle and keep traction much longer.

Yup 2lo would be worth your while in my opinion. Add a lunchbox locker while you're at it so you aren't spinning just one wheel.

Oh BTW you'll also need a new rear driveshaft.

Add the locker and forget 2 lo. I've tried it and it's scarcely worth it. If you can't drive the vehicle in 2WD such that you don't break the rear wheels loose, having low range won't help you much.

It will help when you do have traction, but not enough grunt.

I've done some experiments with my front hubs unlocked on the D44 and although it "feels" good, it has very little effect. The difference with the locker engaged is much more dramatic.

waste of money if you ask me.

it will give u more torque, yes, but your still not going to get the traction you would have if u had 4wd. so its a waste to spend all this money to jus spin tires without making your engine work harder.
