FX4 Level II Electric Shift Transfer Case Interchange

Hello All
I am in need of a new transfer case for my ‘03 Ranger FX4 Level II, as my current case is, um, missing a few chunks. Whenever I talk to a junkyard or parts store, they keep telling me that they need my “Transmission ID Number” in order to find the right unit for me. Unfortunately I am unable to locate such a number on my transmission. Truck has a 4.0l and automatic transmission, and the transfer case is electric shift. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated, as I need to get the truck up and moving pronto and want to make sure I don’t get stuck with a boat anchor. Thanks in advance!

Auto transmission for 2003 4.0L is 5R55E and matching transfer case is Borg Warner 1354 electric.

Would be a good time to install a manual t-case. It's worth it.

Yes I am aware that the transmission is a 5R55E, and that the case is a 1354 electric, but the parts guys tell me I need a “Transmission ID Number” to ensure that I get the correct unit. Examples of possible ID #’s are
1L54-AB, 1L54-CC, 3L54-CA, YL54-AA, etc etc....
Are all electric shift 1354’s interchangeable? I have been told that the connectors for the wiring can be different.

All the t-cases are the same and the shift motor will more then likely be the same as well. I don't think they made anymore then the one shift motor. There was the manual t-case and the electric one. This should give you everything you need in the information department. Transmission, Transfer Case & Driveshaft : The Ranger Station

I don't know why the shops are confused. Except for the unique manual trans/manual T/C Level II, all of the other 2003 transfer cases were the same, regardless of model, engine or transmission.

If it were me and I absolutely had to come up with a number that I couldn't find, I'd use 3L54-CA. That is a 2003 Ranger part number: 3=2003, L54 or L5Z = Ranger.

More evidence: again, going by the part number patterns, this RockAuto page implies that the same rebuilt electric transfer case X4272 can be used from 2001~2009 Ranger.

Thanks for the information guys. Used 3L54-CA as suggested, and now I’ve got a used unit shipping over to me here on the island. Fingers crossed that everything matches up, but it sounds like I’ll be in good shape. Keep on wheelin’!
