Gear Change Clunk

guys I really need help. my 06 4.0 5spd has a clunk from the rearend everytime I shift and let off the clutch to engage the gear. im not shifting hard or revving high or anything like that. it also doesnt seem to hurt or limit shifting just rear end makes anoise when each gear engages. any ideas. maybe get new fluid with some friction modifier???

pwrranger88 Apr 21, 2010 08:02 PM

sounds like a bad universal joint

ZWilson07 Apr 21, 2010 08:39 PM

what all would be involved in changin that and whats a way to tell ifits good or bad, andhow much is it cost. i woudnt think itd be that when it only has 50,000 miles on it

I would first check the play in the gears. Are you sure its not just the slip yoke banging?

Fx4wannabe01 Apr 21, 2010 09:06 PM

Do a search for "slap bump". I'm having a feeling you're suffering from the shaft not having proper lube on the slip joint.

ZWilson07 Apr 21, 2010 09:10 PM

i honestly dont know if its the slip yoke banging or how to check to see if that is lol. how would i go about doing that. nd thanks ill search it when i get home from work. idk if this helps but if i rev alil extra between shifts and left off the clutch ridiculously easy it usually wont do it. but when i do this its way to slow for a good shift i just do it when i can like no1 behind me and doesnt matter how fast i speed up. but wouldthis help narrow it down.

Slip yoke needs greased I bet.

ZWilson07 Apr 21, 2010 09:51 PM

That's just one of the many I've found.

ZWilson07 Apr 22, 2010 03:25 AM

i was reading that thread on it, and is my 06 a one piece or 2 pice, because I think I read if its a one piece than you have to do something different, and if I can just do the method that the thread shown is it better to take it off and use what the ford tsb said that the one guy was talking about, or will it be just fine to do how it says in the thread to just fill the sleeve up with grease from local store.

vista4.0 Apr 22, 2010 06:21 AM

ur 06 should be an aluminum 1 piece.

ZWilson07 Apr 22, 2010 02:42 PM

so what does this mean for my problem or how to grease the skip yoke and all that. also I literally feel this coming from the rear end when pushing in and letting off the clutch. do you think the slip yolk not being greased good is still the problem because the slip yolk is all the way up by the transfer case so the sound is def not coming from that area.

ZWilson07 Apr 22, 2010 08:02 PM

also along with my post above what else could be te problem beens i have the 1 piece driveshaft, wouldyou all think u joints r already bad at 50,000 miles?? and i know alil off subject but what kind of sockets go to take off the fill and drain plug on the rear end. i noticed it was like square when i checed to make sure i had enough fluid in it today

gary1959 Aug 26, 2014 05:51 AM

Did you find the problem. Mine is doing the same.

Scrambler82 Aug 26, 2014 10:06 AM

Hey gary1959,

It has been four years since this post was alive.

Not saying the project isn't done but thinking along that lines, ask me I know about LONG term projects.

Search the site for other threads along this subject, then if you find nothing... start a new thread and ask the question all over again.

Luck,
